The Mandrake Install / Star Office 6
http://www.theregister.co.uk/content/4/25160.html Someone on here was talking about switching to Mandrake. Thought this might be interesting reading for them. Basic interest points: - StarOffice kept crashing when opening Windoze proprietary formats, and fonts were better supported in OpenOffice, which he had to download since it wasn't included. - "You don't get all of KDE. For me this sucks..." (Quote) - "The Mandrake personal firewall (Bastille) is a serious hassle." (Quote) - and he claimed Mandrake 8.1 was better than the new 8.2. - "So to sum up, just in case my characteristic subtlety and mildness of expression went over your head, Mandrake 8.2 is a f***ing disaster." (Censored Quote) Is that great press or what? ;-) (Yeah, The Register isn't exactly an unbiased resource, but a lot of people read it, and the writer was an avid fan of Mandrake before this release.) This has been my experience with several versions of Mandrake. The broken Apache with 5 custom Mandrake files sourced from httpd.conf, Mandrake patches applied that were rejected by the Apache project, etc. But other people seem to like it.
