I am just about to dump suse and try another distro as i am getting very frustrated. using yast to install software and update my system has caused me nothing but grief. i now have a host of problems. well, yast now has no idea what partitions exist on the disk. my / partition is dev/hda5 and my swap is /dev/hda6 yet yast is convinced my swap is dev/hda7 (which doesn't exist) and that my root is /dev/hda6 (which is my swap). of course when i tell it to read the old fstab, the only place it looks for one is on hda6 where of course it doesn't find one. fdisk reports that hda6 is ext2 and hda7 is swap while stating that hda5 is empty. dos's fdisk won't even read the partition table. everything was fine until i was using yast so i am convinced that it is yast that screwed up my partition table somehow. but what i can't understand is why my system will boot no problem from hda5 with hda6 as my swap and the /etc/fstab on hda5 is fine yet yast and fdisk are under the misguided impression that hda6 and hda7 are the correct ones. -- The box said 'Windows 95 or better' so I installed Linux. -- To unsubscribe send e-mail to suse-linux-e-unsubscribe@suse.com For additional commands send e-mail to suse-linux-e-help@suse.com Also check the FAQ at http://www.suse.com/Support/Doku/FAQ/
Hello, Sat, 25 Mar 2000, ÷Ù ÎÁÐÉÓÁÌÉ:
I am just about to dump suse and try another distro as i am getting very frustrated.
using yast to install software and update my system has caused me nothing but grief. i now have a host of problems. well, yast now has no idea what partitions exist on the disk. my / partition is dev/hda5 and my swap is /dev/hda6 yet yast is convinced my swap is dev/hda7 (which doesn't exist) and that my root is /dev/hda6 (which is my swap). You tell YAST what the root partition is, it does not guess this. As for root, if I remember correctly, YAST while installing the distro, will guess the swap partition, but ask for confirmation as to whether if found the correct partition.
For more direct help, better to give the list the exact steps you are following to find your mistake - if it is your mistake. Hi. Thanks. Yast will only let me choose hda6 as my root. it doesn't even know hda5 exists nor will it let me manuallu enter hda5 to choose it as root. (/) which i find weird because my system boots no problem from hda5 and uses hda6 as it's swap. What were you doing before you first noticed these problems. Also, you might try checking that your /etc/fstab file is correct. Victor On Sat, 25 Mar 2000, reg hughson wrote:

/etc/fstab is correct...it's fdisk and yast that appear to be reading the partition table wrong.

Hi Reg, your problem sounds weird, somehow things seem screwed up. In your situation, I'd boot the emergency system and have a stroll round the system. I'd use yast (go into partitioning) to see what partition yast (fdisk, linux whatever) sees, and make a notes about the found partitions and types. Next step is -trial and error- to mount every obvious linux partition to /mnt and look at it. By the files seen, I'd continue to fill my little table with the correct mount points. After that, i'd try to recreate /etc/fstab with the proper entries. After that, it's reboot time. good luck! Is it possible that linux Fdisk reports the partitions
differently than DOS fdisk?
What do you think the partition scheme is? (cylinder
boundaries)
What does Fish report them to be?
I suspect that you just have different names for the same
piece of disk.
