Installation worked like a charm. This is a good package from my first impressions. However, it seems that ppp performance is poor. After recompiling the kernel used is 2.0.33. Is there a known problem wth this? I've looked at the thread history for this list and I haven't noticed this mentioned, but I thought I aw this mentioned in the linux newsgroups. Well, if you can be more specific we can try to address your problem. PPP is ppp, regardless of distribution, and poor performance can be traced to operator error 9 1/2 out of 10 times. It may be as simple as you not having declared "115200" in /etc/ppp/options. Post exactly what your problem is, and we'll try to help. DarkStar wrote:

Okay, in the /var/log/messages file, there is a n error message that states tehhe modem does not support 28800 baud rate. I've noted that telnet, ftp, and web browsing is taking a long time. I'm wondering if the modem is at some slow speed like 9600. -- To get out of this list, please send email to majordomo@suse.com with this text in its body: unsubscribe suse-linux-e

Like I said, check what speed it's set at in /etc/ppp/options. If it isn't set at 115200, make it so. DarkStar wrote:

Ok, I'll try it.
Second question:
I created another .cf file for another internet provider. I did it by
copying the generic.cf file.
I went inot YAST. I configured another PPP device, set defaultroute to
true, and insert the rest of the ip data. It dialed and connected, but iI
get network down errors. Here is the /var/log/messages portoin. Note that
it said it can't replace the defauteroute.
TIA

Another recommendation: remove any mtu xxxx or mru xxxx statements from the options file, or don't use them in your startup. This caused me major headaches until I figured out that I was better off letting pppd figure out the MTU for itself. -- Law: an ordinance of reason for the common good, made by him who has care of the community. --St. Thomas Aquinas, 13th century. -- To get out of this list, please send email to majordomo@suse.com with this text in its body: unsubscribe suse-linux-e

Thanks. It actually turned out that the rc script is setting the default route to the "dummy" device. --- Welcome to my virtual reality! darkstar@charm.net Edwin Brown <A HREF="http://www.charm.net/~darkstar"><A HREF="http://www.charm.net/~darkstar</A">http://www.charm.net/~darkstar -- To get out of this list, please send email to majordomo@suse.com with this text in its body: unsubscribe suse-linux-e
