I just purchased a 9800 pro graphic card and I'm having trouble getting 3D to work. I went to ATI and loaded the installer program and on reboot the computer wouldn't init level 5. Ran Sax2 and got my 2D graphic back. (Note that during the installation I did not have the graphical ATI pics that the site shows, looked more like Yast in console) I then went back to the ATI site and downloaded the RPM for my system and installed it with Yast, again upon reboot had to run Sax2 again to come to level 5 When I open a shell window and type "fglrxconfig" it starts working I quit after it asked for the name of my mouse (PS2)witch I couldn't find. So basically I have two questions first what all does fglrxconfig want to know and if I go through the questions will 3D work or must I reinstall the RPM and run fglrxconfig from a failsafe boot? Thanks for your replies in advance Paul Ryan

You're not going to get 3D to work unless you follow all the instructions they supply to install the ATI drivers. One of those instructions is to run fglrxconfig to create a new X config file. I wonder if the drivers they provide will still run on 9.1 but the info they supply should tell you that. I *believe* you should still be using a /etc/X11/XF86Config file to run your X system. I would make a copy of that file before doing anything. Then follow the instructions. If things don't work right... copy over the created XF86Config file with the saved copy. But FOLLOW the instructions. It won't work otherwise.

Hi Ryan, I just went through a round of this with another user and solved the problem. If you use the SaX2 walkthrough you should know that the ¨-r¨ flag doesn´t work with the latest ATi drivers. As per SuSE the command should be: sax2 -r -m 0=fgrlx -b /usr/X11R6/lib/sax/profile/firegl The -r flag tells sax to re-init the monitor database, but this is not working as it did in earlier versions. What we found is the using ¨-x¨ (xmode) or ¨-V¨ [ --vesa ] cause it to either read the monitors DDC or similar or revert to standard X mode mod lines. This solves the problem for most of us so far. It would be something along the lines of: sax2 -V -m 0=fgrlx -b /usr/X11R6/lib/sax/profile/firegl or sax2 -x -m 0=fgrlx -b /usr/X11R6/lib/sax/profile/firegl So, one would use the ATi installer then back out of init 5 to init 3, call up sax as above and it will write the file to /etc/X11/XF86Config instead of XF86Config-4 as the ati fglrxconfig does by default. If you still insist on using the fglrxconfig then just refuse to save the file (think it asks 2 or 3 times) and then it ask what (as in name) do you want to save the file to. You can then tell it to save the file as XF86Config and copy this file to /etc/X11. This may or may not work... some have had success while others have not. But using SaX2 with either -x or -V (make sure this is CAPS) will get you setup. You can then edit this file to put in other option like FSAA or ansiotropic settings, et al.
