Yes, so am I using the Mantel 2.4.18 kernel, I just re-compliled it to suit the Alsa requirements.
It's worked for 2.4.4, 16, 17 & 18, all from www.kernel.org & Mantel (wich is no longer there of course)
Why would Suse 8.0 not allow this?

This is fine for a kernel downloaded from kernel.org, but this guy is using Hubert Mantel's 2.4.18 kernel, which already has ALSA 0.9 integrated and installed.
A source install of 0.5 may fail under his setup, breaking his sound altogether.
Besides, he's trying to find out what 8.0 is going to be like, and it will use ALSA 0.9.

Any applications that are linked to the ALSA 0.9 libasound libs will not work the 0.5 libasound.
