[opensuse] APIC / IO-APIC mandatory on multi core CPUs?

Hi there, I suffer from often X crashes and keyboard hanging once in a while. I now read disabling APIC may cure this. Since I still use a single CPU system I am curious to know, can the APIC / IO-APIC be safely disabled on a computer that has a CPU with several cores? Or is APIC mandatory for multi core CPUs? Have you proofed that this really _is_ the cause for the hangs, and that disabling APIC helps?

No, it's not. Before I go in all to deep, if your problems really are APIC related, I would suggest to recompile the kernel with CONFIG_X86_REROUTE_FOR_BROKEN_BOOT_IRQS activated first, and you should also consider a BIOS update. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

No, I haven't. And in the mean time I can say it is unlikely an APIC issue. I use the nVidia drivers and will switch to the nvidia agp driver instead of the kernel agp driver, will see if this helps... Other nVidia users complaint about the same symptoms, it may be a driver issue.
