[opensuse] 11.2, KDE4 seems unreliable so far.
I've had openSuse 11.2 with KDE4 on my Lenovo T-61 laptop for about two weeks now. Much of 11.2 works without a hitch - my video card is fine, sound is OK and DVDs play fine. There are, however problems. 1. Periodically, usually several times a day, my display dims, and the only way I can find to reset it is to shutdown, reboot, go into bios and reset everything to default. 2. Kontact is behaving very flakily. If you shut it off, it won't start unless you log out and then back in. All in all I like 11.2 and KDE4, but I don't have time to deal with it's flakiness. I suppose the easiest fix is to go back to 11.1 and use KDE3, but I'd like to understand if the problems I'm experiencing are due to 11.2 or to KDE4. Does someone have suggestions on how to isolate what is causing this? In addition, someone at KDE removed the shredder function from KGPG, but didn't bother to find a replacement. Can anyone suggest a gui replacement? Bob Smits, Ladysmith, BC -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

You could see if this is a side effect of power management profiles. Personal Settings (configure desktop) Advanced Tab Power management Edit Profiles Then for EACH of the 5 profiles, UnCheck Dim Display.
2. Kontact is behaving very flakily. If you shut it off, it won't start unless you log out and then back in.
Contact goes to the System Tray when you close it. Check that its not already down there, and double click it if it is.

4.3.3 is far less flaky than it used to be. Its fairly use-able now. -- A computer without Microsoft is like a chocolate cake without mustard. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

You don't say what version of KDE4 your using. I have 11.2 with KDE4.3.4 on a desktop since last Friday and I am not experiencing any problems yet. I use Kontact with Kmail, Knode, Contacts etc. If you are using KDE4.3.1 I had problems with it. I think that's the version that comes by default with 11.2 i upgraded from: http://download.opensuse.org/repositories/KDE:/43/openSUSE_11.2/ Russ Moses lake, WA. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

Well, I'm using 4.3.1, of course, since that is what came with OpenSuse 11.2. Can I just install the repository you suggest and update?

Yes. Sometimes is faster to try then to ask: "Can I ... ?" Well, it is safe only on spare machine, so if you don't like effects it is easier to fix the problem, ie. restore/reinstall previous. -- Regards Rajko, openSUSE Wiki Team: http://en.opensuse.org/Wiki_Team People of openSUSE: http://en.opensuse.org/People_of_openSUSE/About -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

We're actually preparing an online update to 4.3.4, so you'd get it without adding the KDE:43 repo. I'm writing a mail to opensuse-announce with the details and reasons now. What repo will it be in. Since my KDE:/43 is higher priority than my oss and update repos? -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

It's in KKSD now and will be in the update repos when it has passed QA, a couple of weeks from now at the outside.
