[opensuse] Help with KDE4 customizing
Ok, I installed 11.2 on my laptop and selected KDE4. So far it's slow, confusing, and I can't figure out how to make things work. Please, no comments about googling. I've looked and looked, and now I'm ready to give up. But.... 1. How do I change the K-Button from the Slab to the old style menu?? 2. How do I get my desktop back? Somehow I clicked something and the desktop folder just disappeared.......How can I have a KDE3 style desktop? On the WHOLE desktop without some stupid config thing on the side. 3. Is there a KDE3 Theme for KDE4? I looked at the available themes and didn't see anything useful. 4. How do I change the panel? A lot of the old options are just gone. Basically, if anyone can tell me how to make it look and act like KDE3 I'd be very appreciative. I'll even work on adding a page to the Wiki. I just want clean and simple with no effects and no eye candy...... This is a P3 laptop with an ATI Rage128 based chipset with 8MB VRAM. Not interested in compositing or anything like that. KDE3/11.0 was so much faster than this....... Thanx -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

You figured this one out.

Right click on the desktop-->Desktop Settings and select plain desktop. Might take care of 3 & $ as well.
3. Is there a KDE3 Theme for KDE4? I looked at the available themes and didn't see anything useful.

You said in another email you figured it out.

In the upper right-hand corner is the Plasma icon. Click on it an select Desktop Settings (or possibly Plain Desktop Settings). This will open the Settings dialog box. Change the Desktop Activity Type to Folder View. This will give you a desktop similar to KDE3 with your Desktop folder icons displayed. Then close all of the widgets on the desktop by clicking on the X in the "stupid config thing on the side" of each widget. Finally click on the Plasma icon again and select Lock Widgets.
3. Is there a KDE3 Theme for KDE4? I looked at the available themes and didn't see anything useful.
Press Alt+F2 and in the box type "Personal Settings" and press enter. Click on Appearance and select Style and set it to Plastique and click Apply. Then click on the Windows and select Plastik for the window decoration. You can even go to Icons and select Crystal SVG for the icon theme. I thought i remember that Plastik was a popular theme for KDE3. In the Personal Settings, you can configure mostly everything for your desktop.
4. How do I change the panel? A lot of the old options are just gone.
You need to make sure that you unlock Widgets from the Plasma Icon. Once you do that, you'll notice a Plasma icon on the panel itself on the right. This allows you to add additional widgets to the panel by clicking on the Add Widgets button above the panel. And if you put your mouse over existing widgets, you see a cross-hair that allows you to move them on the panel. If you want to add applications to the panel, you need to go through the menu and right-mouse click on the application and select add to panel. Be sure to lock the widgets when you're done.

There is no Plasma Icon (cashew) if he previously selected Plain Desktop. In that case, he can simply right-click the desktop to select settings. Also: Each desktop can have its own Desktop type. So you can have folder view (the hopeless jumble of icons) on one desktop without making a mess of all desktops. You can have Default view (which allows widgets) on some desktops and plain desktops on others. Personally, I've started to run a Clean desktop. No icons. I make heavy use of Favorites in the KDE Menu (old style, not the slow new style). I've come to appreciate the lack of desktop clutter. Everything is faster. -- A computer without Microsoft is like a chocolate cake without mustard. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

You can also install the package 'gos-wallpapers' to get some KDE 3-era wallpapers. The 'Aya' desktop theme is most KDE 3 - like, without transparency. right click the desktop, Desktop Settings to change it [*]. You can also change the icons to the crystal SVG set from KDE 3.

Did that explain how to make the changes you were missing? Dotan and I are collecting still missing things to get upstream to reimplement them. Will [*] Anyone using KDE 4.4beta1 will notice it's gone from there, FYI it has now moved into Configure Desktop -> Appearance -> Style with other global settings. That had me scratching my head for weeks, I had just learned to look for that on the desktop. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

The 90s called, and they want their desktop back: http://ktown.kde.org/~wstephenson/opensuse-kde \ /openSUSE_11_2_SUSE_10_3_edition.png * Plastik widget style * Aya desktop style * Keramik window decorations * Crystal icons * 10.3 wallpaper from gos-wallpapers * default colour scheme * Tree view mode in System Settings Let me know if there are any more tricks I can apply and I'll write a script to set this up in one go. I guess I'm even more of a curmudgeon. :-) I still prefer the older KDE with its old, easy-to-read "Classic" icons (now removed from distribution :-( ), since my eyes aren't what they used to be. Seems like the KDE folks are working hard to make KDE look as much like the icky Windows desktop as possible (including making configuration infinitely more difficult); maybe Steve Ballmer visits them night and whispers to them in their sleep... +1. Till now one of the first adjustments I did (up to 11.1 with KDE 3.5) was installing "Classic" icons... Old school :-( Have not tried them yet on 11.2 with KDE4. I also used webilder to have wallpapers from webshots. Unfortunately there is no version for KDE4 yet. -- Mark Goldstein -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

These icons are still present in KDE svn, but the artwork maintainer disabled them from being installed by default, so they are not in our kdeartwork4-icons package. I'll find out what's going on there. Dear All, I have tried to use 11.2 installed on a ext4 partition. However, after every boot, some files can't be found anymore. Causing not working X11 environment, loss of personal settings etc. But only on the ext4 partition. After a reboot, I might - or not - have the original files back and lost the new files. This behavior was only seen on the ext4 (root) partition. /boot and a raid array used for data - all using ext3 - exhibit no problem. Hence the idee that ext4 is causing this strange ghostlike behavior. For now, I reverted back to an old partition using 11.0 and await the responses on my e-mail. It would be nice to get them back into the distribution as an optional set, for those of us who aren't interested in the newest look; after hunting for days I finally remembered my old 10.2 install disk and installed it from there. Thank goodness I hadn't discarded the disk! Leslie -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org
