[opensuse] Sax question for 10.3 RC1
All, I have a 6 month old Dell Desktop. I have had 10.2 running on it. I am now doing a clean install of 10.3 RC1. (ie. I had the install format the disk and start over.) Anyway, late in the install process my GUI presentation flashes to text mode presentation for a 30-60 seconds, then I got a flashing screen. I used cntrl-alt-F2 to get a console and brought it down to init 3 just fine. Then I tried "sax2 -l" and after 30-60 seconds I again got a flashing screen. Moving my mouse around I have the impression that the entire screen is a big mouse pointer? Any suggestions how to proceed. Ive had the same problem, the only screen resolution that I could get to work during install was 600x800. Trying to change the resolution after install gave similar problems. Im hoping that these problems magically disappear in the GM release. Razi On 10/2/07, Greg Freemyer <greg.freemyer@gmail.com> wrote:

I can't even seem to do that. This really surprises me. The flashing screen just won't go away and as I said the entire screen acts like a huge mouse pointer. ie. If I move my mouse the flashing changes drastically and if I'm careful I can make the screen stabalize enough to read it. I'm using an old Gateway monitor on my "new Dell". Could that be the reason? Greg, I have no solution for your problem, but as someone else also confirmed the problem, I would suggest that you file a bug report with all relevant yast2 and sax log files, so opensuse guys can fix it. Weirdly, after attempting Sax2 numerous times and getting nothing good out of it, I just rebooted the machine. My KDE login screen came right up and I'm working fine. Truly unexpected. Never even crossed my mind to try a reboot. The resolution looks good, but when I go to Desktop - Configure to see what resolution I ended up with I get "Your X server is using the RandR extension at version 1.2 or greater which doesn't have any configuration yet." Are you using the nvidia binary drivers? If so, always use the nvidia-settings to change the values, not YaST or Configure Desktop. I added a 'kdesu' to the front of the menu item, as it works better if you run it as root. -- Jonathan Arnold (mailto:jdarnold@buddydog.org) Linux Brain Dump - Linux Notes, HOWTOs and Tutorials: http://www.linuxbraindump.org Daemon Dancing in the Dark, an Open OS weblog: http://freebsd.amazingdev.com/blog/ -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

This is a vanilla fresh 10.3 RC1 install. No configuration by me at all. sax2 -p reports: Chip: 0 is -> Intel 965G 00:02:0 0x8086 0x29a2 PCI intel So I don't think nvidia binary drivers are involved in any way. This is the message that I got as well.

Did you ever get your screen to work? Mine is working now. I think the magic was: sax2 1600x1200 TRY to click your way through the screens and get this accepted even though the display is horrible. reboot After the reboot I was golden. Did you ever get your screen to work?
Yep, I got it to work at a resolution of 800x600 (the default) ... I need 1440x900 aspect ratio 16:10
Mine is working now.
I think the magic was:
sax2 1600x1200 TRY to click your way through the screens and get this accepted even though the display is horrible. reboot
After the reboot I was golden.
I think I will download the GM release tomorrow and try that out sometime. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

How A suggestion: the final version of 10.3 is now available -- or will be tomorrow (Thursday) -- so why bother with fooling around with RC1?
