[S.u.S.E. Linux] Installing to a DK440LX SCSI system
After throwing up my hands at Red Hat 5 (CD didn't have the drivers to recognize the AIC-7895 on this motherboard), I have ordered the latest SuSE distribution with high hopes. Here is the setup: Intel DK440LX, 9 GB SCSI hard disc, SCSI CD-ROM drive The first 4 GB of the drive are currently an NTFS partition on which I have installed Windows NT. The rest of the disc is where I plan to install Linux. I have a few questions before I dive into this... Can anyone tell me with certainty if the 5.2 distribution will recognize my SCSI controller? Will I be able to boot from the CD to install? Will the kernel that ships with 5.2 mount an NTFS partition? I'd really perfer not to create any extraneous FAT partition just to get the thing working right--will I be able to avoid that? What sort of incantations will I have to perform to get multiple boot between the two OSes working? I'm also using a Permedia2-based graphics card (this is another thing that pushed me toward SuSE)... Anything I should know about setting up the X server for this board (specifically, it's a Hercules Dynamite 3D/GL)? Prismatic Booger Braden N. Okay... But does this mean I must have a FAT partition or not? Just not being able to mount the NT partition isn't the end of the world. My main question here is: can I successfully install and run Linux on the remaining disc space while maintaining access to my NT installation? Prismatic Booger Braden N. Yes, SuSE will isntall direct from the provided CD media. It will need its own partition of course (well.. you CAN use umsdos, but you shouldn't.. =) It will not be upset by the presence of NT on the disk. Booting is a little tricky, but there is a howto on co-booting the two operating systems. -josh -- To get out of this list, please send email to majordomo@suse.com with this text in its body: unsubscribe suse-linux-e

Try /usr/doc/howto/mini/Linxu+NT-Loader This is a howto file but I don't know enough about NT to understand it fully. I believe the answer is a qualified-yes. It's something about leaving the MBR intact. If you don't have access to the file, send me a private email and I'll send it to you. ---------------------------------- <A HREF="http://homepages.skylink.net/~gecko/index.html"><A HREF="http://homepages.skylink.net/~gecko/index.html</A">http://homepages.skylink.net/~gecko/index.html</A</A>> -----BEGIN GEEK CODE BLOCK----- Version: 3.1 GCS d+(-) s:+ a29 C++$ UL++>++++ P+++$ L++>++++ E? You don't need a FAT partition. To install Linux on a system with NT already installed, my first suggestion would be to have a current NT emergency boot floppies. Then read the FAQ for Win NT and Linux. (sorry for lack of details, I'm tired after cruising around Comdex all day..) Nice booth S.u.S.E.!! Yes. We are using a newer version of the aic7xxx driver which can handle the aic7895. It is able to boot from CD.

The official kernel doesn't yet support NTFS. There is a readonly experimental driver on the CD. If you want to use it, you'll have to patch and recompile your kernel.

Excellent. This is certainly a good place to start.<g>

Okay. Thanks for the information, and thanks to the rest of you who responded, too; I've read over the howto for using the NT OS loader to load Linux, and I'm approaching this with some faint glimmer of confidence.
