is there an easy way to install the kernel, 2.6.0 ? I'd like to keep the old one too -- Hans hans007@prexar.com registered Linux user 289023 "They that can give up essential liberty to obtain a little temporary safety, deserve neither liberty nor safety." -Benjamin Franklin

There's stuff in the archives regarding 2.6.0 kernels and /etc/modprobe.conf. I couldn't get /sbin/generate-modprobe.conf to give me a workable one, so I modded the one that was installed. It says that certain services have failed to start, but they are all up an running fine. I used the SuSE .config ( cp /proc/config.gz /usr/src/linux-2.6.0-test11; cd /usr/src/linux-2.6.0-test11;gzip -d config.gz;mv config .config; make xconfig). You have to make a selection for console on a VT to get the usual startup messages .... CONFIG_VT=y CONFIG_VT_CONSOLE=y Then it's a normal kernel build from there on. barrabas:/ftp/dec03 # uname -a Linux barrabas 2.6.0-test11 #2 Fri Nov 28 16:42:22 GMT 2003 i686 athlon i386 GNU/Linux Regards Sid. -- Sid Boyce .... Hello to all. I did all the steps mentioned by Sid but i only get a black screen when boot with kernel 2.6. Options CONFIG_VT=y CONFIG_VT_CONSOLE=y are enabled, but they are not visible when i run make menuconfig, or make xconfig. Computer is an amd xp +2400 with 512 megas of ram. Any help will be fine. I forgot to mention those quirks, exactly the same here. I've had to change menu.lst to vga=normal in order to see the messages on bootup. CONFIG_VT=y and CONFIG_VT_CONSOLE=y should be in the .config. With make xconfig, the "Graphics Support" --> "Console display driver support" is where it's selected, it doesn't work in -test11, but it worked in the 2.6.0-pre and some earlier versions of 2.6.0-test. I must check the kernel mailing list to see if it has been reported. Regards SId. -- Sid Boyce .... Linux Only Shop.
