[opensuse] Intel GMA 3100 graphics chipset and SUSE 11.x
Hi, I'm about to buy a new workstation that will run 11.1 when it comes out in December. My typical applications are XEmacs, Eclipse, SeaMonkey, VMware, and lots of xterms; so I've got no big need for fancy 3D graphics. I'm considering to use Intel's GMA 3100 onboard graphics chipset and spare me an external graphics card. (Actually, more to reduce the heat and resulting fan noise than the costs.) But then I read in the announcement of 11.1 Beta 4 comments that some people have issues with that graphics chipset and look forward for improvements. So I come here to ask for some experience reports... ;-) Do you use that onboard graphics with SUSE 11.x? Do you have problems -- if yes, in which areas? Although I normally use an nvidia graphics card my onboard intel 945GC intel graphics worked fine with 11.0 apart from the fonts not being as clear. 3D also worked though obviously not as wall as my nvidia 6200 TC. I have a new board with Intel Express G43 Chipset onboard, and thus far the only driver I have been able to get to work with Suse is the Vesa, with maximum res of 1280x1024. This was even after upgrading to the latest xorg/drivers/kernel, which are purported to work.. (Prettty sad!) I am actually at present (apologies in advance!) running Ubuntu 8.10, which works fine with this video. But that has only happened since the official release (last week..) as the previous betas had the same prob. Am waiting patiently for Suse to catch up.... -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

'Best I can tell, there are problems with nVidia chipsets AND Intel with KDE 4.1. The problems are various and may be related to Xorg as well because "stuttering" opengl screen savers, when they run full screen, and video performance problems....slowness. It's still beta and there is time to whip 11.1 into a stable high performance release. But, I'm still NOT sold on the new KDE....TOO many 3.5 functions still not in it or not working well!! Dave, he's talking about 11.1, not 11.0....whole different animal. Fred -- "Politicians and diapers need to be changed regularly -- and for the same reason." -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

Only tried the nv driver with 11.1 when kernel testing, the fonts were just as bad as my experience with 945 got the nvidia driver enabled now. I'll have to try my onboard graphics on 11.1 soon but the only thing that could make a difference is the lack of the package 915resolution in 11.1. I have used my 945 graphic with a vanilla 2.6.27 kernel though and it worked fine. Lastly I must point out I don't use a resolution higher than1280X1024. regards Dave P -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org
