If your nt-workstation (or server) has Service Pack 3 installed then nt encrypts the password in a way linux cannot understand. There's a workaround. I can't remember the exact registry entry but there's one where you can set if nt encrypts the passwords. I think the latest samba version can handle this encryption. I had a case, when setting up my linux box... If the person logged into the Windows (mine was NT) network used a different user name... or didn't have a user name.. or the passwords didn't match... that person couldn't even net view my linux box.
