[opensuse] freenx as system service ?
Hi all, Probably a very dumb question, but: how can I create/configure a system service such that freenx starts with each boot, on runlevel 3 and 5 ? Shouldn't that be only level 5? X is not used in level 3. -- Use OpenOffice.org http://www.openoffice.org -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

Not sure, you may be right. I thought that the server wouldn't have to be running level 5 in order to support remote management via NX. So let's say you're right, I'm happy with level 5 only - how do I make this autostart on machine startup ? -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

Do you have the init script for that in service in /etc/initd/? If not make one for it, use /etc/init.d/skeleton as an example (read the comment carefully within the file, you will understand how it works) After that invoke it with "insserv /etc/init.d/your-init-script-file" as root (you should running this command to register the service) You can check the run level through yast-system-sytem services after you run insserv (well, also with chkconfig) HTH regards, medwinz -- Henny Youngman - "If at first you don't succeed... so much for skydiving." -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

First: man init.d Second: corresponding chapter in the suse admin book (pdf, you have to install it first, very good reading). Third: sample file "/etc/init.d/skeleton" or skeleton.compat Warning: don't create the symlinks yourself. Use the appropiate suse way of things. - -- Cheers, Carlos E. It is easy, once you know how. It has been the same system for ages :-) - -- Cheers, Carlos E. Cheers Carlos, but that's usually the problem for linux newbies like me - it hasn't changed since the 80s (and at that time I was already used to my Amiga) ;-) No offence to anyone, Diego -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

Hi all,
Probably a very dumb question, but: how can I create/configure a system service such that freenx starts with each boot, on runlevel 3 and 5 ?
I don't believe you need to. As far as I know nx does not require a running daemon (other than sshd which is probably already running) The nx proxy is started automatically when you log in with nx. http://www.nomachine.com/ar/view.php?ar_id=AR02C00150 -- Benjamin Weber -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

Iirc, Benji is correct. Also, there is a directory full of stuff for NX you may want to be aware of: /usr/share/doc/packages/NX/ I have not used NX in a year or two, so I don't recall the specifics. You guys are right ! I've just re-started my machine and am happily connecting to NX without any explicit install of a daemon ! How cool is this :-) Thanks for pointing this out, I'm sold on NX. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org
