[opensuse] Plasma-Desktop crashing
I recently got a new laptop (a ThinkPad X220 with Intel i915 video card) and am running into a problem where KDE plasma-desktop will crash periodically. The bottom bar disappears and the background goes black (there aren't windows open over it) and after a second or so it starts back up again and seems to work fine for a while until it happens again (maybe every 10 minutes. I have seen similar behavior with SuSE 11.1 (I think), but in that case my home partition was full - there is plenty of space now. I am running fully updated SuSE 11.4 KDE Base version 4.6.0-6.6.2-x86_64 from OpenSUSE-11.4-11.4-0 kdebase4-workspace is 4.6.0-10.15.1-x86_64 I have looked around on this, and can't seem to find anything, but I am not really sure what I am looking for. I have turned off all desktop effects. Logs can be found at the bottom of this message. Thanks, -Jesse The logs I am seeing in .xsession-errors are: plasma-desktop(26174)/libplasma Plasma::FrameSvg::resizeFrame: Invalid size QSizeF(0, 0) Connecting to deprecated signal QDBusConnectionInterface::serviceOwnerChanged(QString,QString,QString) plasma-desktop(26174)/libplasma Plasma::FrameSvg::resizeFrame: Invalid size QSizeF(127, 0) plasma-desktop(26174)/libplasma Plasma::FrameSvg::resizeFrame: Invalid size QSizeF(127, 0) QGridLayoutEngine::addItem: Cell (1, 1) already taken plasma-desktop(26174)/libplasma Plasma::FrameSvg::resizeFrame: Invalid size QSizeF(127, 0) plasma-desktop(26174)/libplasma Plasma::FrameSvg::resizeFrame: Invalid size QSizeF(0, 0) plasma-desktop(26174)/libplasma Plasma::FrameSvg::resizeFrame: Invalid size QSizeF(0, 0) Object::connect: No such signal QDBusAbstractInterface::Changed() plasma-desktop(26174)/libplasma Plasma::FrameSvg::resizeFrame: Invalid size QSizeF(0, 0) plasma-desktop(26174)/kdecore (services) KServicePrivate::init: The desktop entry file "/usr/share/kde4/services/sysinfo.protocol" has Type= "Application" but no Exec line Object::connect: No such slot AbstractItemView::iconSettingsChanged() Invalid D-BUS interface name 'org.kde.plasma-desktop.PlasmaApp' found while parsing introspection QCoreApplication::postEvent: Unexpected null receiver plasma-desktop(26174)/plasma StatusNotifierItemSource::refreshCallback: DBusMenu disabled for this application KCrash: Attempting to start /usr/bin/plasma-desktop from kdeinit KCrash: Application 'plasma-desktop' crashing... <<<<< snip >>>>> Hi Jesse; Have you checked the settings for screen saver configuration? The every ten minutes sounds like a problem I used to have which turned out to be the X-windows system blanking the screen. I found a script that took of my problem. You could try it to see if it has any effect on your system (mine is a Dell Studio 1745 with Intel GM45express video). #! /bin/bash xset s noblank -dpms exit 0 I named it Xscreen.sh and put a link to it in autostart and haven't had any more blanking issues. Hope it solves your problem. Tom, Thanks for the reply. Sadly, the issue is still there. I fear the 10 minutes was a little bit of a red herring as it isn't that consistent - sometimes it is 2 minutes apart and sometimes it is 15. -Jesse -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

You can try with a new test user. If that works it is some (old) config. Plasma's config is in ~.kde4/share/config/plasma* – so if you move those files while plasma is shut down it should start with the default settings. If that works you could send those config files to bugs.kde.org to tell them what makes it crash. If plasma crashes it will also generate a backtrace which is useful for the devs. To quit plasma you can press ALT+F2 and execute kquitapp plasma-desktop to start it you can issue ALT+F2 and execute plasma-desktop. Steve, Thanks for the ideas,

I have tried removing these files, it does not seem to have any effect. The user is also brand new (no '.' files moved over from an existing system)
If plasma crashes it will also generate a backtrace which is useful for the devs.
Where does this end up? I am not seeing anything more then the stuff in my first post in the .xsesseion-errors file
To quit plasma you can press ALT+F2 and execute kquitapp plasma-desktop to start it you can issue ALT+F2 and execute plasma-desktop.
Hmm, It seems to restart itself right away, stopping and starting it does not seem to get me anywhere, but I will play with that more. -Jesse -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org
For the sake of getting the solution in the archive, what finally tipped me off to the problem was this line in my /var/log/messages: Jul 30 11:08:55 linux-cqwo dbus-daemon: [system] Rejected send message, 7 matched rules; type="method_call", sender=":1.2598" (uid=1000 pid=17815 comm="kdeinit4: plasma-desktop [kdeinit] --nocrashhandle") interface="org.freedesktop.NetworkManager" member="Sleep" error name="(unset)" requested_reply=0 destination="org.freedesktop.NetworkManager" (uid=0 pid=1674 comm="/usr/sbin/NetworkManager)) And I realized that I had chosen plasmoid-NetworkManager over the other network manager front end for KDE. Switching to NetworkManager-KDE4 fixed the problem. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org
