I have looked around on this, and can't seem to find anything, but I am not really sure what I am looking for. I have turned off all desktop effects. Logs can be found at the bottom of this message.
You can try with a new test user. If that works it is some (old) config. Plasma's config is in ~.kde4/share/config/plasma* – so if you move those files while plasma is shut down it should start with the default settings. If that works you could send those config files to bugs.kde.org to tell them what makes it crash. If plasma crashes it will also generate a backtrace which is useful for the devs. To quit plasma you can press ALT+F2 and execute kquitapp plasma-desktop to start it you can issue ALT+F2 and execute plasma-desktop.
