Hello, I wonder if anyone would mind giving some help with setting up tomcat on SuSE 7.1? I installed apache and tomcat off the disks as well as the java2 sdk. I also have php4 running on apache (no problems there). The questions I have are : can I run tomcat as a stand alone for testing without running into problems with my php setup? and what would be the easiest way to do that if it's possible? (again just to get tomcat up and running for testing and development purposes?) OR is it better to integrate tomcat into apache right away? Thanks, roba

Hi,
I wonder if anyone would mind giving some help with setting up tomcat on SuSE 7.1? I installed apache and tomcat off the disks as well as the java2 sdk. I also have php4 running on apache (no problems there). The questions I have are :
I have installed and run apache and tomcat on both SuSE 7.1 and W2K, but not with PHP as well, but I can't see any problems.
can I run tomcat as a stand alone for testing without running into problems with my php setup?
Tomcat runs on port 8080 by default, and can be used as a standalone 'web' server as well. The reason why most people integrate it with Apache, is that Tomcat is not that quick with 'static' HTML files, by fly's on JSP's. This is not really noticible for development or 'smaller sites'
and what would be the easiest way to do that if it's possible? (again just to get tomcat up and running for testing and development purposes?)
Install it and run startup.sh <g> Take a look at this article, it was all I needed to get started. http://www.onjava.com/pub/a/onjava/2001/03/29/tomcat.html (The first page is Windose install, the second is Linux)
is it better to integrate tomcat into apache right away?
I don't normally bother for development. Cheers Phil
