New Leap with which DM running the show? Sorta sounds like, if KDE Plasma was his computer role selection, https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/SDDM#Autologin got enabled and either no ordinary user exists, so it consequently defaults to root, or some mistake set it explicitly to root. If Gnome was the computer role selection, then s/SDDM/GDM/ https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/GDM#Automatic_login -- "The wise are known for their understanding, and pleasant words are persuasive." kde5/plasma5 and sddm (default)

no, no autologin but subsequent logins (third attempt) was correct, booted to <user> rather than root. I'm attempting to do this remotely. :^) -- (paka)Patrick Shanahan Plainfield, Indiana, USA @ptilopteri http://en.opensuse.org openSUSE Community Member facebook/ptilopteri Registered Linux User #207535 @ http://linuxcounter.net Photos: http://wahoo.no-ip.org/piwigo paka @ IRCnet freenode -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org

What did you mean by '"booted to" <user>', the default selection in the SDDM greeter had been (unwanted) root and is now (as wanted) <user>??? -- "The wise are known for their understanding, and pleasant words are persuasive." yes, it did and I didn't change anything. rebooted system for new kernel and it came up as root in graphical mode, runlevel 5. did it again, and the third time came up as the proper user w/o me changing anything. remember, I am 70 miles away as remote admin. I have Xvnc access and ssh but cannot do to much more w/o physical access. for some reason I cannot become root any more :(. I did disable root login but I thought that was only for the graphical mode. and now I need physical access to reset root's passwd. the <user> is not capable/trustworthy/knowledgeable/??? to perform that task :^( and tks for the hint. /etc/sddm.conf is set to the correct <user>. have no idea why it came up root twice. and I have rebooted it another time just to confirm and it came up <user>. who know what evil lurks in the hearts of men -- (paka)Patrick Shanahan Plainfield, Indiana, USA @ptilopteri http://en.opensuse.org openSUSE Community Member facebook/ptilopteri Registered Linux User #207535 @ http://linuxcounter.net Photos: http://wahoo.no-ip.org/piwigo paka @ IRCnet freenode -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org

I don't understand this. You mean that the login prompt says "root"? Then just change it to user. You mean that it says "user" but you type the user password, and you get the "root" sesion? Never seen that. Or you mean that the computer autologins to root? Disable autologin. -- Cheers / Saludos, Carlos E. R. (from 42.2 x86_64 "Malachite" at Telcontar)

no, it automagically booted into graphical mode as root w/o requesting a password. it did it twice. the third time it booted to <user> but did not request a password. I did not set it up this way. kde/plasma, Leap 42.3.

no

I disabled <root> logon in yast users. there is no "autologin" *feature* for kde/plasma that I know of and I have not set it. the machine is remote, 70 miles away, and I will not have local access for a week or two and cannot access <root> account, it does not accept the password. and I have never experienced anything like this. -- (paka)Patrick Shanahan Plainfield, Indiana, USA @ptilopteri http://en.opensuse.org openSUSE Community Member facebook/ptilopteri Registered Linux User #207535 @ http://linuxcounter.net Photos: http://wahoo.no-ip.org/piwigo paka @ IRCnet freenode -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org
