The continuing saga... I tried to just install the compiled binary kernel (k_deflt-2.4.21-0.i586.rpm) and find that I can't even get that to go: gryffindor:/Download/Kernels 69 # rpm -Uvh k_deflt-2.4.21-0.i586.rpm error: failed dependencies: rpmlib(PartialHardlinkSets) <= 4.0.4-1 is needed by k_deflt-2.4.21-0 gryffindor:/Download/Kernels 70 # I have whatever versions of the rpm tools came with 8.2 Pro: gryffindor:/Download/Kernels 67 # rpm -qa | grep rpm krpmbuilder-0.2.6-402 rpmfind-1.6-661 rpm2html-1.5-440 rpm-devel-3.0.6-478 rpm-3.0.6-478 So, I don't know what I'm missing, but I'm obviously missing something to be able to run the 2.4.21 kernel. Any ideas/suggestions/caveats would be appreciated. Mark Almeida -- Powered by SuSE Linux 8.2/Kmail 1.5.2

Mark, Always read the "readme" that Mantel posts on his downloads sections as it could save you some headaches later, both for installing and keeping things working after installing. The new kernel is compiled with the new rpm version 4.0.4 where SuSE is 3.x, but still compatible. Had you taken the time to read the file, you would have known that and also known to do: rpm -Uhv "kernel.rpm" --nodeps In order to install your new kernel without problems. Not trying to be a wise guy here, just pointing out some safety procedures you or anybody should adhere too with kernels. Those guys take the time to write those things, I think it is only courteous for us to take the time to read them. ;o) Pat -- --- KMail v1.5.2 --- SuSE Linux Pro v8.2 --- Registered Linux User #225206 On any other day, that might seem strange...

It does beg the question of why he's using rpm4 to build/package the kernel when SuSE has stated that they aren't planning to upgrade to 4 because of platform support. I took a quick look at the readme to see if there was an explanation, but alas, there was none.. Then again, this is pure curiosity. I use the ck kernels on my home machine and only official releases on the ones at work.. -- trey

Maybe the next version of SuSE might switch. Ya never know. I would think because of who Hubert Mantel is that him using RPM4 is a very interesting thing. Maybe they finally got it patched enough to do the other platforms that SuSE supports outside of the X86 realm. It's food for thought. :) -- Ben Rosenberg ---===---===---===--- mailto:ben@whack.org ----------------------------------------------------------- This e-mail and any attachment is intended for anyone with an email address and does not contain information that is confidential and privileged or that is of any intrinsic value to anyone.

Read the README, especially the part about not running these unless you know what you doing. These aren't meant for general use. -- -ckm

I'm running it :P. So far no problem (except turning ACPI off, otherwise hang when setting CMOS clock). In fact, it fixes my MPlayer problem. -- -- Verdi March --
