I have a problem with my home network. It is working quite well with a Realtek 8029card/hub combo, but I only get 10mb. The other boxes on the network have 100 mb ethernet, but to get them to work, I have to force 10 mb, or nothing works. I've tried a Realtek 8039, a 3Com, the Via-rhine integrated in my motherboard, and a Myson Surecom EP-320x-s, they are all recognized and installed in SuSE 8.1, I can ping the server, but no other computer on the network. Can anyone please help? Thank you FX Fraipont -- ______________________ Courtesy of SuSE Linux nibz.org
The Realtek RTL8029 can only do 10 mbit/sec. If you need to force the others to 10 mbit/sec to get them to work, could it be that your hub is only able to do 10 mbit/sec? Op dinsdag 31 december 2002 17:22, schreef FX Fraipont:

I have a Linksys Etherfast 10/100 card in my desktop system that works perfectly on my home network at 100Mbps. I had a Netgear PCMCIA cardbus card for my old laptop that ran close to 100 (via benchmark). I have a 100 Mpbs integrated NIC on my current laptop motherboard that also runs at 100Mbps. I use a Linksys Cable Modem router with an integrated switch. FX Fraipont wrote:

At my office we are using quite a few Realtek 8139 based cards and they all run at 100 Mb. I suppect you either have a faulty card or something is up with your cabling or the card only works at 10Mb. Have you checked the specs of the card? The other thing to chek is what driver is installed as there are about 3 different drivers for the 8139 card. Don't know which ones are suitable for the 8029 chipset. Sorry can't help any further. -- Regards, Graham Smith ---------------------------------------------------------

The 8029 and 8139 are two different cards. 8029 is only able to do 10 mbit/sec. 8139 also does 100 mbit/sec. For the 8029 you need to use the ne2kpci driver. For the 8139, 8139too.

i seem to recall from earlier discusions that many hubs will not run at dual speeds. they run at the speed of the slowest component. so, if one 10 mbit/sec nic is used the entire hub is slowed to that speed. switches, on the other hand, are capable of adjusting speed according to each device's characteristics. larry
