YES, it's excellent practice for me it keeps me from dreaming while working and playing without knowing what i do it forces me to know what i do before i do it like in real life and i do it since the very beginning 1998 - professionally full-time !

The easies way to find it, is to search on "bookmarks.html".
In general, there's a hidden folder (/home/username/.mozilla) with profile folders under that where the bookmarks.html is located. Steve

Isn't running as root only, a bit of a risk?
NOT at all contrary it's an excellent exercise for real life it forces you to be more aware of whatever and all you ever do to be more careful and think ahead just a practice for real life for eternity

Check the thread on this and you'll see that "Real Men" run as root. Works for all Windows users so it should be "A Really Good Idea" on any operating system. Easier to remember that everything you do on the computer exposes you to risks and therefore you won't do anything risky while running as root because it exposes you to risks. Stan

Yes, I know, but this is one of those situations where it's better to show someone how to do something, that give them only the answer. Remember that old saying: "Give a man a fish and he'll eat for a day. Teach a man to fish, and he'll sit in a boat drinking beer all day". ;-)

Mr Nuekomm, If you like to run as root, that is fine by me [although I really would suggest that you find out more about why not - and I would also suggest that if you are a non-root user, it is easy enough to get root privelige when you need it - usually you get a logon dialog put up automatically. Things have moved on since 1998]. But now I would ask if you would be so kind as to change something else you do. Could you please take a look at your email client and turn off html email. At risk of stating a flame war, I would say html email is unnecessary on this list, or in correspondence generally. In fact the first filter I have for spam is whether the mail has html. So your mail goes straight into my spam folder, and breaks the threading in my SLE folder. You are [unintentionally] today's most prolific spammer. regards Vince Littler

for anyone less than 100% confident, I'm sure you'd agree it's best *not* to run as root. Real men know their limitations.

It was, of course, a joke. If you believe in aversion therapy, then running as root will be no problem, since the pain of a really good, juicy mistake will simply help you become a more perfect user. Other than that, I can't say Hans' reasoning seems particularly coherent to me. Unless he, too, is joking with us. Here's the version of the "Real men ..." quip I prefer to live by: "Real men decide for themselves what it means to be a real man." Naturally, the same goes for women and other sentient creatures. And just plain stupid...no matter what anyone says, including the OP.

Yeah I knew you were joking about real men, but it's less clear that Hans is joking... and it's just plain bad advice for anyone reading who is less than confident and thinks it's a good thing to run as root.

It will be in: ~/.mozilla/Default User/<random name>/bookmarks.html Unless you have more than one profile in which case it won't be 'Default User'

If it was good enough for DOS, it must be a 'Good Thang'. :-)
Well, if he wants to be exposed to anybodies attacks, why don't you let him. It's his computer, time and whatever, isn't it? Maybe he just likes to defend attackers ON his system. ;-) Martin Bruce Marshall wrote:

On a stand alone desktop computer it is not "stupid" to always run as root. Rich -- Rich Matson Reno, Nv. USA
Bill Gates will tell you it is not "stupid" to always run as root. The experience of his users and everyone else will tell you otherwise.
