[opensuse] Sound problems as user on OpenSuse 11 VM
My son liked some of the games I have on suse. So I installed OpenSuse 11 in a VM using VMWare's free server. I then put VMWare Player 2.x on his machine. I guess OpenSuse 11 recognizes VMWare, because it automatically installed open-vm-tools. Everything is working well so far except sound. I can go to the Devices/Sound either as root or as the user account and can play test sounds just fine, but I get no sound in any games. I installed vlc and was able to play an mp3 fine as a normal user. If I su to root and play games sound works. Any ideas? Is there a group called audio? It is possible that root is a member of audio and user is not. In that case, the user can be added to the audio group under user maintenance. Thanks, that worked. Strange that a user would not be a member of audio by default... James -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

On a server with 2000 users, I would not want them to all be in the audio group. That would make /etc/group hard to read. But, I can see doing it on a workstation with a handful of users, and it's all configurable somewhere in yast. Or just edit the "GROUPS" entry in /etc/default/useradd and make sure audio is one of the groups, for future user adds.
