Hi, Can anybody help me with the very basics on digital camera? How to transmit pictures via the USB-port? In windoze I just connect the cable and a transmitting program within the XP is launched automatically. Is there a chance of something similarly in SuSE 8.0? Regads, Thomas

Yes, I use the sandisk also, and it is great for Linux. However, I don't think you will see anything launch automatically as mentioned above in XP. Try mounting your card, then you should be able to access it like a drive. You can copy the photos to your pc and view and/or edit the photos with the programs of your choice. Two that I like are gqview and gimp. Create a mount point for your memory card, such as /mnt/compact flash. Then mount it with mount -t vfat /dev/sda1 /mnt/compactflash *************************************************** Powered by SuSE Linux 8.0 Professional KDE 3.0.0 KMail 1.4 This is a Microsoft-free computer Bryan S. I don't use the automatic method, I like to see what is going on. This is what I do: 1. rchotplug start (this starts the usb service if you don't have it going) 2. plug in your camera and turn it on (you should hear the computer beep when it's found) 3. mount -t vfat /dev/sda1 /mnt/camera (or wherever you want the mount) 4. look thru the mounted directory and copy your photos out. umount and shutdown usb. This can be automated, but it's the foolproof manual way. Others will probably mention the icon method in KDE. -- use Perl; #powerful programmable prestidigitation
I have HP's fancy Photosmart 850. It's so "fancy" that immediate support was out of the question. I finally found that the camera can be configured to appear as a usb camera or a usb mass storage device. As far as Windows is concerned it doesn't matter how the camera is configured. For linux it must be configured as mass storage unless it's already supported as a camera device. SuSE detected and configured it for mounting automatically. I created a device icon on my desktop similar to the cdrom or floppy icons. Now I just plugin the camera and click the camera icon on the desktop and a window opens with my pictures listed. I just click on the pics I want to see or drag and drop them into whatever folder I want. I can click move or copy on the popup depending on whether or not I want them erased from the memory card. If yours is not listed in gtkam or whatever digital camera interface software you use, make sure it's capable of appearing as a usb disk drive and you're set. John Scott Thomas Widlundh wrote:

I use the gtkam software with my Kodak DC4800 on USB and it works quite nicely. I have never gotten the "camera:/" part of Konqueror to work well or reliably with my camera. gphoto2 works in text mode only (yuk!). I haven't actually tried to mount it as described earlier - I'll have to try this just for the record. Using my USB Datafab memory reader works well also. This info will probably vary depending on your camera model. Later, Andy -- Andy Stewart, Founder Worcester Linux Users' Group Worcester, MA USA http://www.wlug.org
