[opensuse] Printer LEXMARK Z605 and 10.3
I have got my friend started on openSUSE 10.3 and one of the hassles he(we) are having is with his Z605 Lexmark (USB) printer which 10.3 doesn't appear to support. (He installed another distro and he had no problems with the printer.) Anyone here using this printer and, if so, which driver in 10.3 is being used? Have you tried just adding the windows ppd to cups? The have procedures for that, in yast, but its usually just as simple as putting the ppd in /etc/cups/ppd and setting up a printer in cups. -- ----------JSA--------- -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

Or just copy the filter file from the other distro. USB/Serial Port/Parallel port doesn't matter... the kernel makes those all appear to be the same. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

I wonder how it works for "another distro" because according to http://openprinting.org/show_printer.cgi?recnum=Lexmark-Z600_series_z601_z60... there is no open source driver available. In general regarding Lexmark, see http://www.linux-foundation.org/en/OpenPrinting/Database/LinuxSupportByPrint... "Useless ... Lexmark JetPrinters"

Only for real PostScript printers the PPD file alone is sufficient. All other printers require a driver, i.e. a program which produces the printer-specific data. I know my Lexmark All-in-One x1200 printer works using the z600 PPD files, Lexmark made a RPM for RedHat 9 that contains the needed files. The RPM is built for an older version of CUPS and RPM won't install it without the --nodeps flag, but the driver works fine with CUPS 1.2.12. If you want to try it I can send you the RPM and a text file that has what I did to install it.
Try this one:
http://drivers.softpedia.com/get/PRINTER/LEXMARK/LEXMARK-Printer-Lexmark-Z60...
Use the PPD driver out of there.
Normally, CUPS works with the PPD files just fine. At least that was
my experience.
Boris.
