Hey gurus, What is the correct entry in "fstab" for a dvd? Is it the same as a cdrom or slightly different? Would something like this be correct? /dev/dvd /media/dvd auto ro,noauto, user, exec 0 0? or /dev/hdd /media/dvd Thanks Patrick -- --- KMail v1.4.3 --- SuSE Linux Pro v8.0 --- Registered Linux User #225206

Hi Patrick, These two lines are relevant: /dev/cdrom /media/cdrom auto ro,noauto, user, exec 0 0 /dev/dvd /media/dvd auto ro,noauto, user, exec 0 0 And, if you DVD drive is, let's say hdd, then you need to link it: #ln -sf /dev/hdd /dev/dvd #ln -sf /dev/hdd /dev/cdrom Linking the DVD also to cdrom is only reasonable if you do not have a separate CD-ROM drive - which is assumed to be the case, since normally you use a DVD drive to replace a CD-ROM drive. That's all in the list archives :-)) I find it easy to browse. Just go to lists.suse.com , then choose our list, 10/2002 (it's at the top anyway) and then sort by thread. Cheers .... Wolfi ============================================= mailto:wolfi_z@gmx.net Linux ... the better OS!

Yeah, but "Searching message bodies" would put alot of load on the server. That's why it's important to put descriptive Subject lines in your posts, rather than "help I'm stumped", or "newbie needs help". -- use Perl; #powerful programmable prestidigitation

And in addition, once the problem is solved; it would help the poor and the only "Unofficial SuSE FAQ Maintainer" to identify the problems and solutions; a final message with "[SOLVED] XYZ problem ". It certainly would help me in identifying the problem and finding the solution for it which in return enable to have a better FAQ to use by everyone. Looks like this is not what "the majority" wants. Yeah, but think how strong your "arms" are getting. :-) -- use Perl; #powerful programmable prestidigitation

I prefer to see posters use "XYZ problem [SOLVED]", so that when I sort 200 messages the solution appears in the same area with the problem.
As long as they have their characters per line less then 72 fine with me. And I thought I was the perfectionist :-) Maybe I should start rowing down the stream it would be easier Row row row your boat Gently down the stream ... -- Togan Muftuoglu Unofficial SuSE FAQ Maintainer http://dinamizm.ath.cx

For me, problem posts on the list fall into two categories: 1) mine 2) other people's, that I "me too". More often than not, an original post from me never gets to [SOLVED] status. For example, I never did figure out how to print, here at the office. Well, I *did* when I installed Red Hat 7.2 on another system in our department... but I've never gotten printing to work from my own SuSE installation to our network printers (none of which are on the same subnet as my PC, so none are detected by YaST2). So, it's been almost two years (SuSE 7.3 and 8.0) that I've been sending my stuff to a Windows box, or have been re-booting into WinNT whenever I need to print. There are some other initiated-by-me requests that were never resolved, but that's the one that greets me every morning... :-) On the other hand, often I will post in an ongoing thread that was started by somebody else, and which looks similar to a problem I'm experiencing. Often, I receive an answer that solves it for ME... but it is not my place to declare the thread [SOLVED], when it was started by somebody else, who may still have his/her problem. Hope you don't get too many calluses from all your rowing.... :-) /kevin

So, what should the complete combination of fstab and links (if any) look like, if I *do* have two devices on the secondary IDE -- the Master is a DVD-ROM, and the Slave is a CD-RW. Until I can get a single drive that reads DVDs and reads-and-writes CDs, I need to keep both in my machine. /kevin

You have it exactly like I got it on both of my boxen. So /etc/fstab reads the following: /dev/cdrecorder /media/cdrecorder auto ro,noauto, user, exec 0 0 /dev/cdrom /media/cdrom auto ro,noauto, user, exec 0 0 /dev/dvd /media/dvd auto ro,noauto, user, exec 0 0 (the rest, concerning HD, floppy, devpts, and stuff, is snipped!) Link it like that: # ln -sf /dev/hdc /dev/dvd # ln -sf /dev/hdc /dev/cdrom # ln -sf /dev/sr0 /dev/cdrecorder In case you only got SCSI emulation for the cd-burner. OR: # ln -sf /dev/sr0 /dev/dvd # ln -sf /dev/sr0 /dev/cdrom # ln -sf /dev/sr1 /dev/cdrecorder If you got SCSI emulation on both drives; NOTE that there is no difference in /etc/fstab, all this is done via the symlinks. DVD and CDROM are always linked to the same target, since the DVD drive replaces the CD-ROM (normally). cdrecorder, of course, is something different. Cheers ....
