Star Office, KDE2.2, XFree 4.1
Ism anyone running successfully with the following combination: Star Office 5.2 (from SuSE 7.2 CD) KDE 2.2 (from SuSE ftp site) XFree86 Version 4.1.0 (also from SuSE ftp site) With this combination Star Office quickly locks up the system, requiring me to telnet in and restart X, or often even reboot. I *think* it might be a compatability problem with X since I *think* it ran OK when I upgraded to KDE 2.2 and started failing when I next upgraded to XFree86 4.1.0. But, I don't remember for sure that I tried it in the couple of days between upgrading KDE and X. Just seems like I would have noticed right away. -- ____________________________________________________________________ Robert Paulsen paulsen@texas.net

Got everything else running running, but not XFree86 4.1. Can you also check to see if you have installed any packages marked "i686", these are experimental and if you have any issues they should be removed. I had them and removed them with no ill effects only positive ones. Matt

Removed kdebase-i686.rpm and kdelibs-i686.rpm then restarted X, but no joy. Still locks up. Perhaps I will try going back to XFree86 4.0.3. -- ____________________________________________________________________ Robert Paulsen paulsen@texas.net

Yeah, oh another thing....Can you back up the directory for StarOffice and try again? Maybe something got corrupted. Failing that I guess it might be a problem :-(. Matt

I had already tried this. Also deleted and reinstalled Star Office without any success.

Backing off to XF86 4.0.3 solved the problem -- Star Office now works without hanging the system. In case anyone is interested in checking this out on their system one reliable way of causing the hang was to maximize Star Office's window then "shade" it by double-clicking on the title bar. It hangs on the next double click which "un-shades" the window. It might have something to do with animating the window since when it hangs, there are lines frozen on the screen from the animation. -- ____________________________________________________________________ Robert Paulsen paulsen@texas.net

I have SuSE 7.2 Pro, which comes with X4.1 and and SO5.2. I've self compiled KDE2.2 from CVS, and SO5.2 doesn't hang the system at any time. Do note that the video hardware is the S3 MobileSavage. They are present in many Toshiba laptops as well. Interestingly enough, only Star Office is affected and it actually runs faster with the above environment variable set, no matter what chipset you use. - -- James Oakley Engineering - SolutionInc Ltd. joakley@solutioninc.com http://www.solutioninc.com -----BEGIN PGP SIGNATURE----- Version: GnuPG v1.0.5 (GNU/Linux) Comment: For info see http://www.gnupg.org iD8DBQE7hQEK+FOexA3koIgRAgzAAJ4mmzIa5/ZJNAjzZIPZCCjKYYvebQCghhrW IhhWOntHncyR1wk8SWMqWBg= =0XUi -----END PGP SIGNATURE-----

I added this to /etc/profile/local and StarOffice now loads in about 5 seconds compared to 15 beforehand. M
