[SLE] Installation Problem #2 - 9.1 Pro - portmapper--REINSTALL
Is there a safe way of reinstalling the 9.1 Pro in order to correct a failed installation? Or, will the same problems I have encountered again reappear? Thanks -- TED

Depends upon what went wrong. Can you tell us more about what you did. i.e. cd or ftp etc. Rich

Richard and James, here is the information you requested.
Has anyone installed 9.1 Pro and had portmap start (or seem to start and
then quit)?
I cannot find portmap when I do "ps -A | grep portmap".
When I try to "mount gateway:/HDD2 /SomeDir" from another Linux machine I
get the error:
RPC: Port mapper failure -
RPC: Unable to receive.
When I examine /var/log/messages after doing "insserv /etc/init.d/portmap" I
do not see any evidence that it ran or failed.
However, when I re-run inetd it immediately displays an error, some kind of
failure in communicating.
All this makes me think that something has not been configured associated in
some way with the operation or enabling of portmap. When I cause it to
produce a status or retry it always declares success yet it must immediately
fail because it does not show up on "ps -A" as it does on the other Linux
machines. Could the firewall inhibit the operation of portmap?
Should I be getting SuSe support to look at this problem?
Thanks-TED

Nor should it. Try 'chkconfig portmap' or better 'chkconfig --list portmap' - but notice that it just tells the service to start at the needed runlevels, not to start at that moment. To start it "right now" use 'rcportmap start'. You can try, also, to set up network in yast. If I remember correctly, at some point it asks you whether it should run portmap. -- Cheers, Carlos Robinson

It might help, if you mentioned what the problems are. ______________________________________________________________________ Post your free ad now! http://personals.yahoo.ca
