Slowly getting fed up with SUSE 9.1 - next problem apache2
Hello! I am a programmer, who has to test portability of C# ASP.NET applications on different linux platforms running Mono and Apache2. Currently I try to set up working test environment in SuSE 9.1 which runs as guest operating system in VMware v4.5.2 (supported) on WinXP Pro SP1 fully patched. So far I have got through several glitches (kernel update, gnome environment setup problems etc. etc. etc.) - this is already 5th full installation of the whole SuSE 9.1 and 10th or 12th (I dont remember now) system restore operation with revert to snapshot option in VMware. I CANNOT START APACHE2 ON SYSTEM!!!! Every attempt to start httpd2 process gives return value 7 and obviously server does not run! I have reainstalled the whole stuff several times, followed dot by dot every instruction in admin guide with no result. My current configuration is default system, standalone workstation, with simple web server. Any ideas how to fix it? Jacek

Step 1) To start apache2: rcapache2 start Check for errors (/var/log/httpd) Step 2) If that's ok, to start apache2 automatically at boot: insserv apache2 To configure apache2, use YaST's HTTP Server Configuration (command: 'yast http-server'). If apache2 does not run in Step 1), then filling in the hostname (the *real* fqdn) might just be enough. Cheers, Leen
Hello! Actually problem was elsewhere - I have not configured SSL cache properly! Errors are loged currently at /var/log/apache2/error-log (SuSE 9.1 Apache2) Cheers Jacek -----Original Message----- From: Leendert Meyer [mailto:leen.meyer@home.nl] Sent: Sunday, June 27, 2004 2:04 PM To: suse-linux-e@suse.com Subject: Re: [SLE] Slowly getting fed up with SUSE 9.1 - next problem apache2 On Sunday 27 June 2004 13:39, Jacek Blaszczynski wrote:

So then are we safe in assuming you publicly retract your swipe at SuSE for what was clearly Your fault??? -- _____________________________________ John Andersen
Unfortunately I have to admit that it was premature statement - problem is
still there - no error messages in logs only wranings on SSL cache (SSL is
disallowed on server). Whats up?

Did you have a look at /usr/share/doc/packages/apache2? Especially README.QUICKSTART.SSL? Cheers, Leen
Hello Again! Sorry its my error again - but problem is not solved! rcapache2 start - runs successfully but service cannot be started Any ideas please! 1) stop re-installing all the time ;) 2) run YOU 3) follow up if it helps. Peter
Hello Again! Thnaks for support but I see that more detailed explanation is needed: 1. SuSE 9.1 was installed in VMware v4.5.2 running on WinXP SP1 Pro fully patched host. 2. SuSE 9.1 is connected via virtual ethernet card supplied with VMware to WinXP host - communication is establieshed, tested and working. SuSE is running as an itnernal network machine communicating with internet via NAT service supplied by VMware. 3. VMware tools are installed and working properly (what is not the case for Fedora Core 2 for example!) 4. After installing apache2 with basic or expanded set of modules server cannot be started both using Yast2 (from KDE, Gnome or root console sessions obviously at runlevel 5 and 3). Server is enabled in Yast2, Server name is set according to result of running hostname command. 5. All server values are set according to admin manual of SuSE 9.1 6. When trying to start apache2 from Yast2 runlevel editor in advanced mode - result is that httpd returns value 7 and does not run 7. When I run scripts from other posts server does not start. 8. During boot process apache2 fails to start. 9. No one reproted that kind of errors in VMware so far - I do assume tehrefore that either I screwed up installation somehow or SuSE 9.1 does not handle properly apache2 10. VMware provides very nice utility - snapshot - which preserves state of the system at any given time allowing to revert very easily to it - i did it several times to test different configurations with no success. Any ideas? Wrong assumption. I read this, turned to my freshly installed hardware SuSE 9.1 install and became root. I typed "rcapache2 status" and saw that the web server was not running. I typed "rcapache2 start" an waited for the prompt to re-appear. I turned to another machine and typed http://ip.of.syse91.machine/ and hit enter and saw a web page. That was the FIRST time I ran apachie on that box and it worked out of the box. When you have an unusual setup (VMware), never assume it is SsSE's fault when something does not run, unless you have seen a whole bunch of posts to that effect. If it couldn't run apache2 this list would be drowning in complaints. -- _____________________________________ John Andersen

May I repeat my question: Did you run YOU on that system?
