Hi, I'm trying to get information about what socket 754 motherboard are fully supported by SuSE 9.1 since the SuSE hardware database is empty on the subject. A few people answered my request on the suse-amd64 list, here what's known and unknown: Known ok: Albatron K8X800 Aopen AK-86N MSI K8T Neo-FSR ASUS K8V SE Deluxe Gigabyte GA-K8VNXP Gigabyte K8VT800 Pro (need the correct BIOS, but Taiwan support people look responsive) Known problems: Chaintech ZNF3-250 (stability problems were reported) Unknown: ABIT KV8 / KV8 Pro / KV8-MAX3 AOpen AK86-L / AK89-L / AK89 Max / AK89-N ASRock K8S8X ASUS K8V / K8V Deluxe Biostar K8NHA Pro Chaintech VNF3-250 / ZNF3-150 / ZNF3-250Gb Pro / SK8T800 EPoX 8HDA3+ / 8KDA3+ Gigabyte K8VT800 / K8NS / K8N / K8NS Pro / K8NNXP / K8NSNXP MSI K8N Neo-Platinum / K8T Neo-FIS2R Soltek K8AV2-RL I'm looking to know if everything on the board works without any binary-only drivers. If it works but you need binary-only drivers please mention it. Thank you in advance, Laurent

I'm not really an expert, but I have the K8N Pro (not specifically mentioned on your list) and I've been very satisfied with SuSE 9.1's performance on it. -- Bryce Hardy (Santa Rosa, CA USA) cygnia@sonic.net
Hi Laurent: I'm running SuSE 9.1 64-bit on an AMD Athalon 64 3000+ on an Asus K8V Deluxe motherboard. While there are good points with the install, there are some major teething problems and I'm not sure where they are or what is causing them. During the installs and upgrades/patches, etc., SuSE has always correctly found the 3Com card and the sound card, both on the motherboard. It also has the correct drivers for the video card (ATI 9200 SE and the monitor). I'm experiencing some headaches with the boot process and some KDE issues. For example, sometimes the machine will boot only to show a desktop without the taskbar or, at other times, without the desktop icons (SuSE help, trashcan, floppy and CD drives, etc.,). There's also a conflict between the CD player and the K-mixer (the CD player is silent - easy to repair but a minor problem). My best guess is that resolving the issues will get better as more patches/upgrades become available. I think the problem is that it is (more or less) new technology and some teething problems are to be expected. I don't like the teething problems but I can see major improvements (I didn't have to tweak the sound card, the 3Com card, etc. The e-mail was just filling in the correct blanks, etc. and I don't have to mount/unmount the floppy or CD drives). I did try to install SuSE 9.1 32-bit format but that turned out to be a bigger headache than the 64-bit install. For the most part, more things are working than not working. In SuSE 8.2, I had a lot of problems tweaking the printer under LPRng as CUPS was creating its own misery. Under 9.1, CUPS (and this surprized me), works like a charm for both OpenOffice and WordPerfect for Linux (go figure). I don't know if this helps or not. I like the machine/software and I think that once some of the problems are resolved, this combition (AMD 64/Asus K8V/SuSE 9.1 64-bit) will be a real winner. -----BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE----- Hash: SHA1 | Gigabyte K8VT800 Pro (need the correct BIOS, but Taiwan support people look responsive) I've got the Gigabyte K8VT800 and the AMD 64 3200+. Monarch Computers installed the latest bios on the barbones kit I purchased. Installing 9.1 wasn't a problem. I had to do a manual install and load the module for the nForce NIC (forcedeth) and then proceeded to do a ftp install. I've got a nVidia GeForce FX 5500 XT and the install saw the card, but didn't get the driver right. Insisted on installing the Frame Buffer module. Not a problem, I knew how to fix it after the install was done. ~ Can't comment about 9.1 finding the SATA stuff as I have it and the RAID diabled in the bios. I aslo tried to use the Performance option form the bios and that turned my box into a nice doorstop. Box wouldn't get to the point where it handed over the boot process to the bootloader. Back into the bios and reverted back to Defaults and a few manual tweaks and everything was back to normal. It's been running for a couple of weeks now and everything seems ok. Small problem with 9.1 and KAMix not keeping sound settings, but nothing major. As a note: not everything that works together in the 32 bit version does so in the 64 bit version. I had to install the 32 bit version of Mozilla and Firebird to get the flash plugin to work. Also, Unreal Tournament 2004 (64 bit and 32 bit, tried each) work under 9.1 64 bit.
