I was trying to run xine and it seems that it isn't configured from the install. Furthermore, there is not xine-config script as mentioned in the docs. So what are you supposed to do in order to get xine running?

Might be helpfull if we new which version of Suse you were trying this on, and where you got your xine. The xine on the suse disk is crippled, and old. Go here, download all the xine rpms, put them in a single directory and rpm --install *.rpm http://packman.links2linux.org/ And don't forget libdecess if you want to read encrupted dvds. -- _____________________________________ John Andersen

I'm using the crippled Suse 8.2 version. Is there a directory that I can add to the suse installer to get these rpm's so that they are kept up to date?

Yes. There are daily xine updates at: http://cambuca.ldhs.cetuc.puc-rio.br/xine/ And an easy faq to tell you what to do. BTW which is the crippled Suse 8.2 version? I've not seen it advertised. Cheers and happy viewing. Steve.

I'm curious. Is MPlayer any better under suse 8.2? I need a player, I don't care which.

It is crippled too due to legal reasons. You can either compile from source or download it from the packman site. Charles -- "Open Standards, Open Documents, and Open Source" -- Scott Bradner (Open Sources, 1999 O'Reilly and Associates)

No, Mplayer is no better. A fully functional xine seems to do most everything correctly. It's often better to uninstall the xine that comes on the SuSE disks before getting the one frpm pacman or cambuca as there are fewer conflicts. Other hints you may need: In YAST sysconfig there is a setting that allows you to set your dvd drive to dma mode. You want this set on or you will get herky-jerky video. -- _____________________________________ John Andersen

After years of developing viable software we are crippled beyond all previous levels by a bunch of legal wranglings by money hungry butt-heads. So much for innovation. This is a good example of what not to do. I do hope that the EU is not as stupid as the US and is able to limit the software patents. All this is OT, but thanks for the links, I'll give them a try and see what comes out.

Its not like we are depriving the Movie industry of any money. We buy these damned DVDs anyway. We just want to play them on our box and not bill's box. How can it be legal to service the guy that arrived at drive thru restaurant in a chevy but refuse service to the guy driving a ford? Why isnt that an illegal restraint of trade? They don't even sell the dvd palyers for windows, they give them away. -- _____________________________________ John Andersen
Xine coming with SuSE 8.2 is not quite complete as far as know and some files are not distributed due to license issues. One thing is to go to this page http://packman.links2linux.org/. Click on the english flag if needed and download all necessary files under xine-lib, xine-ui, libdvd* and install them. Then run xine and press the left mouse key (if you are right handed) and choose the preferences or options. Then you can configure everything you like.
