[opensuse] No xfce in 42.3
For some years I have been using lxde and later xfce with openSUSE versions up to 42.2. I am now doing a net install of 42.3 with, I had hoped, xfce. Previously this was a simple choice on the User Interface page, but this choice has disappeared with 42.3. All I see is User Interface Please select a user interface * Desktop with KDE Plasma * Desktop with Gnome * Server (Text Mode) * Custom Why has xfce been removed? Is there some way of getting an xfce desktop on openSUSE 42.3 as I had with 42.2? Xfce definitely exists in 42.3, I used it two days ago but I did a zypper dup from 42.2, maybe it's under custom. Dave P -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org

Thanks, I found xfce under custom, I clicked and I get a set of 10 patterns: XFCE Fonts X Window System Multimedia Graphics Base System Enhanced Base System AppArmor Yast System Administration Software Maintenance There appears to be no 64 bit support, no support for 32 bit software, no console support, no networking, and no documentation. This is not as good as 42.2. The change is just making work to no advantage. I do not see why the Xfce button should be removed from the User Interface page. What was the problem? Could we have the xfce button back as it was in 42.2, and with the original set of patterns? Well, it is under 'CUSTOM' afterall. But I agree with your general complaint: if one is used to see something in a certain place and then it either gets moved or simply vanishes then it throws a user off his/her "balance" -- and then the Questions start, and answers, re "what has happened to...?!"... In this particular case, it would have been more sensible to have replaced 'CUSTOM' with "More desktop environments". Only two (2) more words but more informative than the simplistic "CUSTOM". And, of course, since there is no single openSuSE list anymore (replaced by a myriad of opensuse, opensuse-packaging, opensuse-factory, opensuse-xyz), if the normal user was subscribed to the specific mailing list where it happened to be discussed, the normal user just never know.... yes, *this* post is "somewhat after the fact". the discussion was prior the the "fact", er action. hmmm, facts sure seem to get in the way. -- (paka)Patrick Shanahan Plainfield, Indiana, USA @ptilopteri http://en.opensuse.org openSUSE Community Member facebook/ptilopteri Registered Linux User #207535 @ http://linuxcounter.net Photos: http://wahoo.no-ip.org/piwigo paka @ IRCnet freenode -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org

It was discussed in the factory mail list, as typical for most of these things. Or rather, announced. -- Cheers / Saludos, Carlos E. R. (from 42.2 x86_64 "Malachite" at Telcontar)

Why has xfce been removed? Is there some way of getting an xfce desktop on openSUSE 42.3 as I had with 42.2?
It hasn't been removed. The devs wanted that screen to offer limited choices, so if what you want isn't among the first three, you need to make your selection from Custom. -- "The wise are known for their understanding, and pleasant words are persuasive." I wonder why? What was the problem that needed solving? What's wrong with having Xfce as an official openSUSE desktop option on the User Interface page? The discussion is in the mailing list archives. The foundational reason as I remember is this screen is the first exposure a n00b sees and devs do not want an overwhelming number of selections presented, but rather simply, the two flagship DEs plus server. Experienced users know that selecting custom, and then /details/, one is presented with every possible choice that does not depend on any optional repo. If the details screen were presented to a n00b he would most likely abort. -- "The wise are known for their understanding, and pleasant words are persuasive." You should have spoken out at the time the decision was made. Now it is too late. Not that people complaining makes any change, anyway... They simply wanted an interface that needs no modifications if interfaces are added or removed, because that is take care of with patterns. YaST remains thus intact in the future. -- Cheers / Saludos, Carlos E. R. (from 42.2 x86_64 "Malachite" at Telcontar)

so is space on the console where the choice is provided. maybe kde3 should be included there also, there may be 3 or 4 people still using it? -- (paka)Patrick Shanahan Plainfield, Indiana, USA @ptilopteri http://en.opensuse.org openSUSE Community Member facebook/ptilopteri Registered Linux User #207535 @ http://linuxcounter.net Photos: http://wahoo.no-ip.org/piwigo paka @ IRCnet freenode -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org

This is becoming off-topic, which I don't like, still I can't resist to comment. I think the number of those still using KDE3 or/and TDE is much higher (by magnitudes). Once it would be interesting to make a query or survey regarding this.
