I need to take screen shots for different applications /tools within Suse Linux 8.1 with KDE . Can anyone advise how to proceed.
With 8.1, I believe "pixie plus" is installed "by default" and it has the ability to take "screenshots". Unfortunately, this capability isn't obvious: there isn't a corresponding toolbar button for the "take a screenshot" menu item... Other programs that can take screenshots includes the Gimp [or so I'm told] and one other I used on 8.0 that I cannot remember the name of [but I bet it was something like "ksnapshot" -- 8.0 would have used kde 2, and I don't think this application was migrated to kde 3] - -- Yet another Blog: http://osnut.homelinux.net -----BEGIN PGP SIGNATURE----- Version: GnuPG v1.2.2-rc1-SuSE (GNU/Linux) Comment: http://osnut.homelinux.net/TomEmerson.asc iD8DBQE+pilCV/YHUqq2SwsRAoD3AJ4xtX6DrL1mzq4SP0gz9csg2HqxlgCfeYgT B0K7HizCJy1Z71wLgTFL2UI= =GlE4 -----END PGP SIGNATURE-----

Yes, ksnapshot comes with every version of KDE and it's in 8.0, 8.1 and 8.2 :)
Ahh. I suspect the "default" setting of "what parts of KDE to include" changed from 8.0 to 8.1, because (a) I noticed ksnapshot was "missing", and (b) pixie plus had the same functionality [which might have been the reason for (a)...] - -- Yet another Blog: http://osnut.homelinux.net -----BEGIN PGP SIGNATURE----- Version: GnuPG v1.2.2-rc1-SuSE (GNU/Linux) Comment: http://osnut.homelinux.net/TomEmerson.asc iD8DBQE+piwUV/YHUqq2SwsRAoG2AKCj8GZunquf6unqnj2JSoHeh2ioMgCfcgX5 dGS6xcWuTNYrOIQwub19DJo= =ULeB -----END PGP SIGNATURE-----
I have used Ksnapshoot in the past. The SuSE dvd also has xgrab and xgrabsc. If you don't like them try http://freshmeat.net for other projects. pben On Wednesday 23 April 2003 12:40 am, Saeed Ahmed wrote:

Hi
I need to take screen shots for different applications /tools within Suse Linux 8.1 with KDE . Can anyone advise how to proceed.
I find the easiest (and not limited to KDE) is to use the ImageMajick utility "import". Just run "import my.jpg" in an xterm, then the mouse cursor will change to a "crosshair". Then move the crosshair over the window you want to capture, (or on the desktop for whole screenshot), and click. You will hear a beep, then my.jpg will be in the directory you ran import from. -- use Perl; #powerful programmable prestidigitation

Wow, I can't believe no one mentioned the one tool I've used to take screenshots for years now - The Gimp! Open the Gimp File - Acquire - Screenshot Then choose between "Whole screen" and use the "after x seconds delay" to give you time to move Gimp or your pointer out of the way, or you can use the "single window" and go with or without "decorations" (the window manager part of the window - title bar, buttons, frame). Never used anything else, so I can't say if it's any better or worse than anything else. -- John LeMay KC2KTH Senior Enterprise Consultant NJMC | http://www.njmc.com | Phone 732-557-4848 Specializing in Microsoft and Unix based solutions

However good GIMP is, launching it is a bit big operation for a mere
screen shot. I prefer the `import' program from Image Magick, and uses
it through the following script, named `click' here. I usually type:
click GOAL.png
for creating file GOAL.png to hold the screen shot I want. There is a
three second delay first, and then reasonable default options -- you
may use arguments to override or select other options which `import'
recognises. The last argument is the file name you want to create.
Once the cross appears, you may either click on a window to take a photo
of that window, or drag a rectangle of the size you want for parts of
windows, or spans of windows.
Long ago, I was making `.gif' images, which I do not really use anymore.
For `.gif', Image Magick was not making best compressed image, in which
case the script below uses some `netpbm' tools to repack it.
Have fun!
