[opensuse] Opensuse 10.2 nice, but second problem
Hello, it's me again My new Opensuse 11.2 connected to the internet automatically, I had never yet seen that since SuSE 6.4, The mail was very easily received, but unfortunately I cannot configure the outgoing mail properly. I use SMTP, but I always get the same error message 5.7.0 Error : authentication failed. It is the same with Kmail, my usual mailer, But I get a similar result with Thunderbird. Both work fine on reception, using POP. That is why I must reboot to 10.2 every time I have to send a message, which is not very convenient. I suppose there must be a configuration file which Yast could not write properly, but I do not know which one it can be. Could any of you shed a bit of light on this question, please ? -- Paul Ollion Proud Linux user SuSE 10.2 -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

And you have configured your SMTP authentication correctly?
I suppose there must be a configuration file which Yast could not write properly,
No, YaST doesn't configure SMTP authentication for you. /Per -- Per Jessen, Zürich (10.9°C) -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

Does your isp require that you authenticate to send mail via smtp? Most don't where I live. In Kmail go to Settings -> Configure Kmail -> Accounts. Select the Sending tab, select the appropriate outgoing account and click Modify. Go to the Advanced tab and uncheck "SMTP requires authentication". KMail sets this on by default (using the current username/password from your logon). IMHO this behaviour is wrong, but that is how they've designed it. Maybe the developers' SMTP accounts require authentication and they kept forgetting to configure it, I don't know ;-). If, on the other hand, you *do* need authentication, then on the Advanced tab mentioned above make sure your username/password and authentication method are correct for your isp account. Also, if you use encrypted transport then back on the General tab click the "Check What Server Supports" button so it detects the appropriate encryption method and smtp port to use.
