Hello SuSE people, Seeking some advice here. My lcd monitor is dying. In looking for a replacement I am wondering if I should go wide screen. Is there any problem with making it display properly? Manually configuring files? Running an nvidia fx5700 video card. Bob S -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

I'd hate to have to go back to an old square one now. The widescreen is nice :-) I've not had any problems with setting up the resolutions on several different brands of widescreens. In 100% of the cases they were simply autodetected by either sax2 or nvidia-config (depending on the system setup/drivers used etc.). On a clean install, they've also all "just worked" and were automagically set up to run at the default max resolution without me having to do anything out of the ordinary. I have a 42" HDTV with a computer monitor input. I haven't tried it as a monitor yet, but perhaps I should. Of course, it's a bit big to put on my desk. ;-) -- Use OpenOffice.org http://www.openoffice.org -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

You obviously haven't got a big enough desk :) Don't forget to leave room for your feet and a coffee mug. Cheers, Dave -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

Go for it! I have a 50" and use it to watch motorcycle races all the time. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

Bob, I have an old Dell Dimension (PIII 866) with an NVidia FX5700 Ultra that works perfectly with an Acer 22" widescreen at 1680x1050 resolution. Fantastic use of older hardware. The 5700 drives the display just fine (and is actually faster than the recent NVidia 8400GT) Widescreen is definitely the way to go. The additional screen realestate is fantastic. Even working from a framebuffer console (runlevel 3) with frame buffer resolution set to 1280x1024 (vga=0x31a) it works great. With any X desktop, the NVidia driver will give you native 1680x1050 -- David C. Rankin, J.D.,P.E.
