[opensuse] Got VirtualBox ose working!! Can't install Guest Additions
The Host OS is openSuSE v11.1 x86_64. The Guest is WinXP, and it works well. I got this far by ignoring the error messages that had stymied me previously; VB error messages tend to be uninformative and even misleading. The problem now is that I have been unable to install the Guest Additions. Devices > Install Guest Additions returns a message informing me that it can't find the needed image file in either: /usr/share/virtualbox/VBoxGuestAdditions.iso /usr/lib/virtualbox/additions.VBoxGuestAdditions , and offering to down load it. The file was downloaded, and deposited in the .VirtualBox directory. I copied the file to the first-named locations above; it is not possible to copy it to the second, because, although there is a /usr/lib/virtualbox directory, there is no "additions" directory, and no possibility of making one, because there is a file called "additions". (The file, by the way, identifies itself as "plain text", but it is in fact binary. I have no clue what it is.) With the image file safely pasted in the one directory that will accept it, Devices > Install Guest Additions is still unable to find it. Have you checked "CD-ROM/DVD mount" in the settings of Guest OS?
The problem turned out to be that the version acquired from openSuSE repository doesn't appears to be unable to install Guest Additions in the automatic method described in the User Guide. (As I said in my original query, VB error messages are not necessarily connected with reality, and should be taken with a grain of salt). Falling back on the manual method, which the User Guide offers as optional, not as a workaround for bugs, does the job very neatly. My XP guest is now equipped with the Additions, and I am now equipped with means to fight back against airheaded web designers that learned the Micro$oft way to build websites. -- Stan Goodman Qiryat Tiv'on Israel -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org
