Hello, I have two laptops on which I run SuSE -- an IBM Thinkpad T20 and a Toshiba Tecra 520CDT. The IBM is a p3 700, 256Mb RAM, + 12Gb disk. I had been running SuSE 7.2Pro on it for sometime -- I recently upgraded to 7.3 Pro and, it is me, or is 7.3 noticably slower than 7.2? I also have a very old Tecra with a p1-166, 64Mb ram (soon to be 98 or 160Mb) -- I know this is "ancient" hardware, but it has a great screen, and it totally functional. I would like to set it up for light web use and some shell work -- given it's limited power, what would be a good version of SuSE to run on it? Thanks, Dominic

. I run 7.3 on my A22p 900MHz and it's fast as lightning. You likely need to do some tweaking, like framebuffer, AGP4 setting, souped-up drivers, and disk DMA & 32bit. http://dir.yahoo.com/Computers_and_Internet/Software/Operating_Systems/UNIX/... http://gatos.sourceforge.net/overview.php Always run the latest stable stuff dude. As to the other notebook, heh, use the latest, but don't expect X. On Saturday, 13 April 2002 19:48, you wrote:

Did you do an actual upgrade or did you install 7.3 fresh? A clean install is much better than an upgrade. 7.3 on my Dell laptop screams. Just as fast as when I ran 7.2 on it. Best Regards, Keith -- LPIC-2, MSCE, N+ I can C for miles and miles Got spam? Get SPASTIC http://spastic.sourceforge.net

I installed SuSE7.3 personal over rh7.2 on a T20, same specs, no complaints. IIRC it defaulted to 33Mhz bus; easily changed, but SuSE doesn't need nearly as much configuration for performance as rh6.2 required. RealPlayer takes anywhere from 5 to 40 seconds to start up, but that's an exception, and SuSE is always faster than Windows, as well as giving more control over viruses.

I run 7.1 on a more recent Tecra - I don't recall there being any installation problems :) alan On 13 Apr 2002 at 17:48, Dominic Maraglia wrote:
