I cannot get a clear picture of the description of Windows XP and SuSE 8.0 on the same machine. I want to buy a new notebook, which has Windows XP installed, and I want to setup SuSE 8.0 parallel to it. Since XP is pre-installed, I have no idea if it fits together or not. A co-worker of mine bought a Dell w/ XP on it. He also bought Partition Magic (whatever the new version # is that supports XP) and he just resized the XP partition and installed SuSE on the rest of the drive. He's used it for about 3 months now and it works fine. I don't know of any other partitioning tool that works to resize XP other then Partition Magic. I would check out PM to see what the cost is. * Ronald Wiplinger (ronald@elmit.com) [020413 11:34]: ::I cannot get a clear picture of the description of Windows XP and SuSE ::8.0 on the same machine. :: ::I want to buy a new notebook, which has Windows XP installed, and I want ::to setup SuSE 8.0 parallel to it. ::Since XP is pre-installed, I have no idea if it fits together or not. :: ::Can anybody give me a hint? :: :: ::bye :: ::Ronald :: :: ::Ronald Wiplinger (ÃQ¤¯¯Ç), CEO, ELMIT - THE Internet Solution Provider ::Tel. +886 2 8809-7680, Fax. +886 2 2809-9158, Mobile: +886 915 653-452 ::Net2Phone:8869550066, ICQ: 111651169 ::http://www.elmit.com http://www.wiplinger.org -=Ben --=====-----=====-- mailto:ben@whack.org --=====-- "I've never been quarantined. Can anybody give me a hint? ================================================= Several months ago, I bought a Sony Vaio w/XP pre-installed, and I now dual boot RH 7.2 w/no problems what-so-ever. No tricks, gimmicks, or wizardry. It just installed w/o a hitch. Hope your experience is similar!

HTH,
Mike Our experience with dual boot on Stinkpads, 2K or XP with SuSE7.3 or rh7.2, has been excellent. Say what you wish about the LT-winmodem, it works as well in linux now as in Windows. If you want more control over the hardware, look up tpctl, but we get along without it.

I got a CD with my Stinkpad, that rebuilds the Windows on-disk. I wiped it clean, laid down Reiser, and installed Suse7.3 . Then installed VMware 3 and made a virtual machine for WinXP. Booted the VM to the CD, and I installed XP there. (HA, that's all it gets) Been running great. On Saturday, 13 April 2002 13:33, you wrote:

I run SuSE 7.3 and Windows XP on the same system. If Windows XP is installed on an NTFS filesystem SuSE will not be able to resize the partition; you'll need to buy Partition Magic 7.0 (note the version number) instead which can resize XP NTFS partitions without a hitch (it's what I used here), then afterwards install SuSE which will detect the empty space and act accordingly. Another thing you might note for a notebook if you need to use a dial-up modem is that many of them have "winmodems" which either do not work or do not work as well under Linux. You'll need to get a "controller-modem" or "hardware modem" for Linux. (Incidentally it will also perform better with Windows because it'll be less of a strain on the CPU.) -- "It's Fabulous!
