Correct me if I'm wrong, but there is no longer any real reason to purchase the commercial release of Novell's SuSE Linux, right? I want to support SuSE Linux development, but there has to be some kind of quid pro quo. As it stands, there simply is no up-side to purchasing the commercial release. We (North American purchasers) are forced to go through the Novell / Digital River (with whom I've had many successful and satisfactory transactions in the past) to acquire this release, implying there is not even the mere possibility of competitive pricing. Furthermore, the on-line repositories contain a superset of the package complement of the commercial product. From that perspective, it's simply foolish to purchase this release. It really seems that Novell does not even want to generate $ale$! My best guess is that openSUSE is just a means of beta testing the Enterprise products. Frankly, I'm fine with that, but I surely hope they don't count on purchases of the SuSE Linux product, 'cause there's just no reason to buy it. It's not that I'm going to switch distributions, but my several-year-long practice of buying a copy of every SuSE Linux distribution, including a couple I didn't end up installing, seems to be at an end. Don't forget those users that want to see the product continue to be developed, and want to vote with their dollars. For some of my clients the cost of SLES is easily justified. Others, are much smaller. But I insisted each of them buy the "Pro" edition in the past just to send the dollars in SuSE's direction. No. I was referring to Novell's SuSE Linux product. This is _not_ part of the Enterprise line, the 'E' in SLES and SLED.

This is correct. It is no longer important to generate revenue with openSUSE sales. openSUSE is however and will stay our flagship homeuser product, it will not go away when no boxes are sold. The goal is mainly a presence in the desktop and homeuser market, and also a trying bed for the latest and greatest new technologies. [ Standard Disclaimer: I receive no compensation from.............. ] We also live "out in the boonies" but have found a couple viable options. One is available just about everywhere. Two way satellite. Stay away from Direcway/Hughes. It works but speed is an issue. Wild Blue has the speed. Of course with satellite communications heavy cloud cover and stuff can degrade signal to the point it drops the connection. WIFI. We have found a local WIFI supplier that is great. HIGH speed and reliability. Doesn't seem to be affected by rain, even pretty heavy downpours. Only major issues have been when lightning hit one of his towers and someone hacked into his system. We use the WIFI as our primary connection, with the satellite secondary, and dial up as last resort. -- (o:]>*HUGGLES*<[:o) Billie Walsh The three best words in the English Language: "I LOVE YOU" Pass them on! -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

Glad to hear 10.2 is working for you. I have not got mine installed yet. Have problem with KDAR which I want to backup /home with. My problem is not modem but an ISP who limits downloads/uploads to 5GB/month without extra cost. If I downloaded everything for 10.2 I would not have much left for everything else that month. Since I'm on the county fiber network (real high speed) which works great with 9.1 and 10.0. Find out soon about 10.2. How fscking quaint. a hand crafted product, built to order. What is this, the 1890s? I wonder if these folks are familiar with the assembly line concept of mass production. I mean, you'd think they could plan ahead based on past orders and say, have a few thousand boxes ready for shipment... I ordered my 10.2 boxed set yesterday, with 2nd day air - but if they take a friggin week to ship it, I've just wasted my money. Hopefully the message quoted above is just boilerplate passed along by some well meaning drone - if not, I'll be rather disappointed in Novell's ability to plan and execute. Dear Ladies and Gentlemen of this fine list :-) - I know not much about the US postal system nor other distributional matters in your part of the world. - But let me tell you of a small (one man show, I don't know??) business in my part of the world, Denmark. See www.linuxpusher.dk, they'll burn CD/DVDs and ship them same day. Prices is the cost of burning, shipping and a small reasonable profit. - If legal (?) in the US, such a small entrepreneur would solve at least one of the box problems that I gather you have - from reading this thread. - and a MERRY CHRISTMAS and HAPPY New Year to you all too ! -- ------------------------------ Med venlig hilsen/Best regards Verner Kjærsgaard Denmark. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

I believe you would need to have permission from novell to "sell" or at least to advertise to "sell" the download of opensuse in the united states. (I have tried this before on ebay to sell previously owned boxed sets, they remove the auction, and sent an email stating novell asked that my auction be removed ) As near as I can tell the novell trademarks and anything to do with opensuse would have to be removed from the package first. These are registered trademarks, which no one has the right to distribute for profit without permission. I never pursued it further, but Im sure the fee is quite steep. -- This computer is powered by OpenSuse 10.2 1:38pm up 19:36, 2 users, load average: 0.25, 0.29, 0.17 kernel-2.6.18.2-34-default http://norwichlinuxusersgroup.com -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

It's a script. I use one that's about the same. My question is why custom build?? -- Russ
I have yet to get a response to my inquiry , but I did log onto Novell and start another order, since that seems to be the only way to contact them. If you try to place an order it says it is ready to ship. I sent a "question" tho that seems only to want to know if I am tax exempt or VAT or similar. And you must choose one of their subjects, there are 4 , none of which is "other" and none of which cover my question! anyway this was on the page I got when I checked the sales location: PLEASE NOTE: If the product you have ordered is In Stock, your order will ship within 2 business days. DHL - Ground is only available for US lower 48 States - For UPS Ground shipments, please allow 5 - 7 business days for delivery. International Shipments: Shipping charges do not include any Brokerage Fees, Customs Fees or Taxes that you may be charged.
