[opensuse] focus follows mouse (poll, sort of)
Hi list, having switched to KDE (4.4.3) this february, there is one thing that really bugs me: The eratic behavior of the input focus when using the 'follows mouse' setting(*). I had a look at bugs.kde.org, and it turns out that this is an issue that is around for *years* already. Now I really start wondering: What focus mode do you use? Is no one actually using follows-mouse? Or are you using it, but don't care about the bug? At least for me, I cannot really tell which is worse - having to click each time I change the focus or having to cross-check twice where my focus *actually* is. Both make me think of jumping off the waggon again... (*) it is quite unpredictable which window will get the focus when you do things like switch the desktop with keystrokes, quit (dialog) windows etc. Most often it is *not* the window the mouse cursor actually is in, and then you first have to move it out and in again.... I'm using KDE 4.4.3 with "focus follows mouse" with a delay of .5 s, and I don't have any problems with it that I'm aware of. Could you post the bug report number?

For example 142040 and 159989. There are a lot of them related to focus-follows-mouse... The problem is *not* when moving around, it occurs typically when the screen content changes without the mouse pointer being moved (switching desktops, closing windows). 142040 doesn't apply here; 159989 does and is fairly annoying.

I agree, I've noticed some problems with mouse focus before. Unfortunately, it seems that few are willing or capable of fixing kwin bugs...

I use focus-follows-mouse. But I use GNOME. No issues to speak of.

I might lose this one but for me the focus follows mouse one of the most evil inventions since Windows :-) I want the mouse out of the way when I type and then the window I want to type in no longer has the focus or if I even accidentally bump the mouse and suddenly I am typing in another window. I admit "to each his own" but I struggle to see how this feature is good.

I find that using a bright window border and title for the active window and a dull one for other windows makes it pretty easy to know 'intuitively' where the focus is. (yellow + grey in my case) Damon Register wrote:

As long as the feature is an option, everybody can be happy and there's no need for you to struggle :) Cheers, Dave -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

I am totally against having to click in a window just to use it. It's all about choice. Next time you go to type in a window set your mouse down and away from where you can bump it. -- Ken Schneider SuSe since Version 5.2, June 1998 -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

Or get a "track-ball" which has it's own place and doesn't move on purpose. When you reach for it, it is just there. And it doesn't leave brown rice laying all over the desktop or key tray. -- Patrick Shanahan Plainfield, Indiana, USA HOG # US1244711 http://wahoo.no-ip.org Photo Album: http://wahoo.no-ip.org/gallery2 Registered Linux User #207535 @ http://counter.li.org -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

I'm not using it.
At least for me, I cannot really tell which is worse - having to click each time I change the focus
I generally use Alt-Tab to change focus, only occasionally do I click on the task-bar instead. -- Per Jessen, Zürich (14.7°C) -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

Same here. The idea of moving the mouse pointer away so I can see what's there or type in the window unobstructed, but then loosing the focus because the pointer is no longer in the window seems counter-productive. 'follows-mouse', when I've tried it, seems to have the effect of making the windows look more like a rotating kaleidoscope toy. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KXp0VeIJpKY -- When you are in any contest you should work as if there were - to the very last minute - a chance to lose it. Why don't you set the mouse to "dissappear" after so many idle seconds so it dosen't obstruct your viewing and doesn't require "special" attentin? And now that I want to tell you where and how to do this, I cannot find the location of the configuration, but... I do have mine configured to blank the mouse pointer immediately on any keyboard action in the focused window, ie: <shift-key> -- Patrick Shanahan Plainfield, Indiana, USA HOG # US1244711 http://wahoo.no-ip.org Photo Album: http://wahoo.no-ip.org/gallery2 Registered Linux User #207535 @ http://counter.li.org -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org
