[opensuse] Burned DVDs all Coasters!
I'm running OpenSuse 10.2 on one of my desktops, which also has a dvd writer. Lately, whenever I burn a data DVD with K3B, the program goes through all the motions as if it's correctly burning and verifying the DVD. Yet when I examine the disk that's been burned, Konqueror tells me the disk I just burned is blank. My Sony DVD DRive is working just fine, and if I boot to Windows, I can successfully burn a disk with Sonic Record. I have also tried burning a disk (all DVD-R) with GnomeBaker and I get the same result as with K3b. Does this mean the problem is with growisofs? When I look at the K3B site there seem to be many bugs all related to not being able to burn a dvd. Does anyone have a handle on this? I would personally use K3b to build an ISO image but use wodim/growisofs to burn it, for some reason K3b is not entirely sane in interaction with this new set of tools. DVD-R is the least data friendly of the DVD formats, DVD+R and DVD+RW are more reliable in my experience. DVD-R is really more aimed at multimedia use... Try burning an image with growisofs from the command line and take note any messages (to avoid more coasters, use RW format for the test :-) )... - -- ============================================================================== I have always wished that my computer would be as easy to use as my telephone. Not heard of that problem on any other list. Can't deny it maybe your experience, but I think you describe personal preference rather than genuine fault with k3b.
DVD-R is the least data friendly of the DVD formats, DVD+R and DVD+RW are more reliable in my experience.
Again personal preference not fact. I and others on other lists have found the opposite - DVD+R just won't work on my systems - laptop and desktop.
DVD-R is really more aimed at multimedia use...
It's a myth that one media suits music, another data, another video. Data is data. DVD-R is probably the most compatible format for all types of hardware because I believe it's older than the others by about 5 years. Therefore, s/ware and h/ware has had more time to learn about DVD-R.
Try burning an image with growisofs from the command line and take note any messages (to avoid more coasters, use RW format for the test :-) )...
Good advice for fault-finding. The only time I have had the 'coaster' experience described by the OP was when the media was no good. Change brands of dvd disc and definitely avoid 'no-name' cheap discs - they're false economy. When wodim rather than cdrecord was adopted quite a few people had problem with wodim and K3b... Some re-installed the original cdrecord software to deal with the problems that they had with the wodim/K3b combination ... K3b has been unreliable for me for quite some time for the actual burning process ( I have been working on some perl stuff which seems to promising for managing wodim/mount/growisofs to burn data without too much grief)....

Read carefully "least" does not mean not... these are hardware restrictions not media restrictions...

There are some significant differences in the low level structure which make DVD-R a little less suitable for Data usage... (though to what extent this is FUD from the DVD+R camp is a moot point)... I did spend some time looking into this. I refer you to the article below as a starting point.... http://www.cdfreaks.com/reviews/Why-DVDRW-is-superior-to-DVD-RW there is also some interesting data on the DVD+RW alliance site on this. http://www.dvdrw.com/information/DVDRW_Physical_Format_Explanation.pdf

Hi, I cannot confirm that. I am using 10.3/32bit, installed from scratch. Recently I burned 3 sets of the SUSE 10.3 2 doublelayer DVDs of about 6GB each. Worked greatly with K3B, like it always did, just like a bunch of CDs that I made yesterday. Maybe I did not check it thoroughly, but no complaints from here. Maybe it depend on yoour hardware. I am using a very old NEC DVD_RW ND-3500AG, where I updated the firmware from Linux! Btw. that made me go for another NEC, next time. Because I had problems, I did a little hunting for a solution, and I did find a number of people reporting similar issues to those I was experiencing, but no solutions. I think you right that there is a hardware element in this issue. When K3b has worked for me it worked very well, when it hasn't the experience has been very frustrating, not least because the error reporting was very poor... - -- ============================================================================== I have always wished that my computer would be as easy to use as my telephone. OK, Some more information....................................... I looked up using growisofs witht he command line and tried burning that way. I have some books on mp3 files, so I tried to burn one of the folders to dvd -r (Don't have any RW dvds here) BobsDesktop:~ # growisofs -Z /dev/hdc -J -R -V Books /sounds/books/"Agatha Christie" Executing 'mkisofs -J -R -V Books /sounds/books/Agatha Christie | builtin_dd of=/dev/hdc obs=32k seek=0' I: -input-charset not specified, using UTF-8 (detected in locale settings) mkisofs: No such file or directory. Invalid node - '/sounds/books/Agatha Christie'. :-( write failed: Input/output error BobsDesktop:~ # As you can see it couldn't find the files. (Now my main systems has two IDE drives, a SATA 320GB drive and a USB drive. I was trying to source the files from the SATA Drive) First, I thought it just didn't like a "split" file name for the directory, so I moved files to a Temp directory. BobsDesktop:~ # growisofs -Z /dev/hdc -J -R -V Books /sounds/books/Temp Executing 'mkisofs -J -R -V Books /sounds/books/Temp | builtin_dd of=/dev/hdc obs=32k seek=0' I: -input-charset not specified, using UTF-8 (detected in locale settings) mkisofs: No such file or directory. Invalid node - '/sounds/books/Temp'. :-( write failed: Input/output error Same result. Maybe mkisoffs didn't understand the directory because my 320 GB SATA drive is mounted as /sounds. I tried the path that shows when I use Konqueror to go to the drive first, but that didn't help either. BobsDesktop:~ # growisofs -Z /dev/hdc -J -R -V Books /media/sda5/books/Temp Executing 'mkisofs -J -R -V Books /media/sda5/books/Temp | builtin_dd of=/dev/hdc obs=32k seek=0' I: -input-charset not specified, using UTF-8 (detected in locale settings) mkisofs: No such file or directory. Invalid node - '/media/sda5/books/Temp'. :-( write failed: Input/output error Next I took out the _V and Volume part of the command, with no difference. BobsDesktop:~ # growisofs -Z /dev/hdc -J -R /sounds/books/Temp Executing 'mkisofs -J -R /sounds/books/Temp | builtin_dd of=/dev/hdc obs=32k seek=0' I: -input-charset not specified, using UTF-8 (detected in locale settings) mkisofs: No such file or directory. Invalid node - '/sounds/books/Temp'. :-( write failed: Input/output error Next, I moved the files to a directory off my home directory and tried again. This time it appeared to start burning, as you can see below.

Immediate reaction... backup... now.... while you can... Have you tried looking at it a) from windows b) from another drive.... third test would be to attempt to write to it from another burner... When I have seen the burn apparently succeed but the disk reported as a blank my first thought is usually media failure... my second is hardware failure but you indicate there is no problem.... I was looking for an article/blog which gave a bit more info, that I had read some time ago that backed up my understanding the limitations of the various formats and useful hardware details... and finally found it...and remembered to bookmark it this time :-) One of those Doh! moments as of course it is written by the author of growisofs... http://fy.chalmers.se/~appro/linux/DVD+RW/ It also includes info on DVD-R. Dont know whether it will help OP's problem but it is a useful resource.... - -- ============================================================================== I have always wished that my computer would be as easy to use as my telephone. The DVD burner works fine under Windows now, and it worked fine under opensuse 10.2 until recently. I haven't knowingly made any changes to my system beyond the regular updates, but I also don't burn dvds very often, so it's been months since I needed to do it. The hardware is a Sony dual layer burner that worked fine from 9.3 on. -- Bob Smits bob@rsmits.ca Television is an invention that permits you to be entertained in your living room by people you wouldn't have in your home...David Frost -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

I have the DVD Drive working again. Today, I went back to re-examine the problem, and trying burning some .mp3 files to dvd. I burned a folder, everything seemed fine, and then when i reinserted the DVD, K3B told me I had inserted a blank DVD. But I noticed that it picked up the name of the folder I had burned, so clearly it was not blank. So I went back and looked at all the settings for K3B. Nothing seemed out of the ordinary, but I noticed that in Advanced, Miscellaneous, the setting for Do not eject medium after write process was NOT checked. As an experiment, I turned it on (checked the box). This time everything finished normally and the DVD showed that it had data files on it. I don't fully understand this result, but I wonder if someone else can investigate this also. Bob

I have not verified this with the current version K3b but I do remember experiencing a similar problem 4 or 5 years ago....

Try "ls -l /sounds/books/Temp". If that works, I think you should report this to bugzilla.

I haven't been able to burn a new DVD-RW for a long time. Strange thing though; I can write (and read) new data on DVD-RW which have been previously written on (either with growisofs in the old days or windows) but in the case of a brand new blank, I end up with a coaster. It appears as if something isn't closed properly as I can see (visually) that more data has been added to the disk. I suspect that it is hardware dependant. I would like to explore this a bit further but so little time. Good luck! -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org
