hi all ! My uptime in Linux doesn't really go over 2 days... why ? Because there is some very deep driver issue with my audio hardware, VIA 8237 audio. That is when working, my sound system suddenly fails, and starts to produce noise. - the problem is so deep that even "init 6" - full restart doesn't helps ! ! I still hear that noise even in GRUB Bootloader, where should be no sound at all ! ! ! That is very old bug, affecting SUSE Linux 10.0 and maybe earlier... link: https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=263022 Platform: openSUSE 10.2, 32-bit, AMD Sempron, VIA KM400 chipset, VIA 8237 audio, 1GB of RAM. I would suggest downloading the latest beta drivers from the alsa web site. Compiling and installing them to see if that corrects your issue. Otherwise to eliminate further frustration on one of my sound issues I purchased for $16 a sound blaster live card and eliminated the sound card hardware giving me problems. Haven't had an issues since and the $$$ were far less than further frustration and time sorting it out. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

I've personally never been able to get it to work, no matter how many hot-to's I went by. Probably not saying much, but it's some input at least, heh. -- "Those who would give up essential Liberty, to purchase a little temporary Safety, deserve neither Liberty nor Safety." Not sure if this is the same that happened to me yesterday...I was listening to some .ogg's I'd made from one of my CD's, and decided to play around with kmix (I normally use alsamixergui) to 'tweak' the output a little. I noticed in kmix some things that were 'turned on' that weren't in alsamixergui, so, I clicked on one of them and the next thing I know I've got the sound of three cats fighting coming through my speakers, no music at all, just a nasty screeching, scratchy sound. I rebooted the system, and it was still there. I opened alsamixergui and started looking at things and saw that my 'mic' *and* webcam were turned 'on' to record from. I clicked off the 'mic' and the nasty sound instantly stopped. Unfortunately this is too simple to know what really happened. Maybe though it'll give you an idea where else to look though. I've always hated kmix because it never seemed to do things just as I wanted. YMMV. -- "Those who would give up essential Liberty, to purchase a little temporary Safety, deserve neither Liberty nor Safety." The VIA1717A, or AD1980, is the soundchips
and what VIA 8237 is used for?
The 8237 is the chipset responsible for general I/O ('southbridge'). Theo -- Theo v. What about my first suggestion? Get another soundcard. Here those cost about €10,- ($13) nowadays, that's hardly worth spending time on.. Theo -- Theo v. The problem even with a same chip is how it is connected to the rest of electronics on the board. I have the same audio chip and no problems. Actually looking at the attachments in bug report it is almost the same hardware built on motherboard. Does BIOS set the registers properly? It seems that BIOS doesn't touch the sound chip, as it runs all the time unless the power is shut off, or widows driver set registers properly. Maybe BIOS update can help? Does vendor has BIOS update? If BIOS is not vendor specific, ie. with computer ID placed in a flash memory that is used by windows, than it can be used Gigabyte BIOS update. -- Regards, Rajko. http://en.opensuse.org/Portal -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org
