[opensuse] I wonder if there is a quick PDF viewer
-----BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE----- Hash: SHA1 Hi, I wonder if there is a file viewer/browser that displays in the left pane the list of files in a directory, and in the right a quick view of the highlighted PDF file. I tried Dolphin. Quick view does nothing. Preview is active on right pane, does nothing. mc: does raw text view, no decoding. F3 (view) does conversion. crusader: no. Thunar: no. Nautilus: not that I can see. Gnome commander: not that I can see. I'm using 13.1. The use case is that I get correspondence from my bank like one file per "letter", often one page only. The file name is cryptic: not date, not something related to the content. I have to go file by file, hit click on enter to see it in another window, discard, open the next... I would like to see at least the first page in a panel, and the list of files in another. Hit "cursor down", and get a quick view on the other panel automatically. When I find the file I'm interested in, then open it with a real pdf reader. - -- Cheers Carlos E. R. If Dolphin does nothing then it probably needs configuring. Go to Configure Dolphin... -> General -> Previews and check Postscript, PDF and DVI files. Also, under the Behaviour tab above, you might want to check Show Tooltips, as the large tooltip overlays may provide a bigger preview than what you get in your preview pane, depending on its size. I had thought that this PDF thumbnail functionality relied upon a thumbnail plugin like that for ODF files, but I can't see one installed so I assume it comes by default in a regular KDE installation. gumb -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org

Yes, was going to suggest the same thing. I use Dolphin to get useable previews of PDF files all the time. There are settings that control which files generate previews. -- Sent from my Android phone with K-9 Mail. I don't have such an entry. There is another for DjVu. Missing package? Plugin? I have Dolphin 4.14.10

Are you two talking of preview inside what would be the icon for the file? That would not suffice for me, the text would be unreadable. I need a much larger view, in another panel. The feature works on plain txt files, or png files. Not on postscript or PDF. -- Cheers / Saludos, Carlos E. R. (from 13.1 x86_64 "Bottle" at Telcontar)

I'm talking about the preview pane in Dolphin. You can Drag that pane wider for readable previews. This same issue was mentioned a month ago or more rewarding PDF previews and I posted the necessary steps to get them working. Some LDR plugins are required, and their name mentioned previews or thumbnail or some such. However it has always just been part of the normal kde install for many releases now without me having to chase extra's. Not at my machine right now, or I could give you the specifics. Maybe Google dolphin PDF previews plugins. -- Sent from my Android phone with K-9 Mail. Ok, perfect.

Do you remember the subject line of those posts, so that I can search for them? I found: X N 576 15-01-24 15:18 Istvan Gabor (6190) . [opensuse] KDE4 dolphin pdf file preview which is not yours. I grepped for "dolphin" and "view". The suggestion is to use konqueror, and it doesn't work. I can right click on a file, and ask for a preview, which can be done by a netscape plugin (error message unable to load plugin), but which opens a panel, or preview in okular, which works, but is in fact a full view, the panel with the list of files is lost, so that I can not browse the files with the cursor and see their content in a panel or window automatically. Grepping for "PDF preview" finds this thread. I'm looking at 2015-16 mails in this mail list.

What is LDR? :-?
Not at my machine right now, or I could give you the specifics. Maybe Google dolphin PDF previews plugins.
I see notes for kubuntu, and bugzillas at openSUSE saying that it is broken. And as I'm using 13.1, there is no chance of getting it repaired, I think. On kubuntu, it suggests installing "kdegraphics-strigi-plugins", which I don't see. Maybe: kdegraphics-thumbnailers - Graphics file thumbnail generators I'll try installing that. [...] YES! It works now. Thanks! :-) Although it is almost unreadable. Even setting dolphin to full window, and the preview pane to half of that, the receipt is displayed in the center with large empty band around (as big as the receipt itself). The contextual menu of the preview doesn't adjust anything of the preview, but of the file properties; and ctrl+/- adjusts the size of the file pane, not the preview pane. I can barely see what each bank receipt is about. It is a huge advance, but I'm not there yet... - -- Cheers, Carlos E. R. I found a working workaround: convert the files to djvu with pdf2djvu. The dvju preview is much better, it resizes to the pane border, as large as I want. So I just need to create a little script that scans my correspondence folders and creates a duplicate tree in djvu format, and work on that one instead :-) There remains another unrelated problem: the spacing between some letters in some of those PDFs is too big, breaking words. This also happens when converting to djvu. Only acrobat displays correctly these files. And I can't do a bug report because these are bank files... I'll have to live with it. - -- Cheers, Carlos E. Previews != thumbnails (or are they?). I think I have an open bugreport on the lack of thumbnails for PDFs and Libreoffice. As gumb suggests, there is some plugin missing. https://bugzilla.opensuse.org/show_bug.cgi?id=855348 https://lists.opensuse.org/opensuse-factory/2015-10/msg01148.html -- Per Jessen, Zürich (19.4°C) http://www.hostsuisse.com/ - virtual servers, made in Switzerland. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org
