[opensuse] LAN share printer without CUPS
The U-Verse idea is on hold because I can't open the port 631 on multiple computers at the same time. So, is there a way to share a printer Linux to Linux without CUPS ? Many. But the question is broken: cups != port 631 port 631 just provides two of several ways to access cups (admin web ui and printing via ipp://) Most of the other common ways to print with unix before cups came along, (and which don't travel over port 631) cups also can do. So, for instance, if you want to print via netcat or lpd, you could install some other print spooler besides cups (like lprng) but it's unnecessary since cups impliments a perfectly good lpd server. Please rephrase the question to ask what your real problem is. (IE: port 631 firewall problems. And in that particular example case, describe the actual problem, don't just say you can't do it. Say what exactly you THINK you need to do, because probably you do NOT actually need to do that.) This may mean first learning enough about how your system works to even _know_ what your real problem is. -- bkw -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

U-Verse Gateway both computers are going through: Gateway firewall can open port 631 at one time to one computer (so far, having 2Wire look into this) Computer 1 - opensuse 11.1 - firewall 631 open - USB printer Computer 2 - opensuse 11.1 - firewall 631 open Duaine -- Duaine Hechler Piano, Player Piano, Pump Organ Tuning, Servicing & Rebuilding Reed Organ Society Member Florissant, MO 63034 (314) 838-5587 dahechler@att.net www.hechlerpianoandorgan.com -- Home & Business user of Linux - 10 years -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

Not exactly what you asked, but maybe better (unless the printer already has built-in ethernet or wireless): http://tinyurl.com/y8rf6q7 -- "Our Constitution was made only for a moral and religious people. You can order multiple public IP address with the U-Verse service,
there is no other way to forward 1 port to multiple computers.
If you have multiple comptuers on the same LAN and wish to quickly
enable sharing to other machines, you can add all the CUPS printers to
the "main" computer using URL... If when you go to CUPS on a machine
the printer is http://host:631/printers/hp just add a new printer to
the other PC with that URL.

WOW, I didn't even have to do that. I just told the other machine to go to a specific host and it told me that I could talk to CUPS via port 631. It appears that U-Verse does not like to - pass through - "query" broadcasts. THANKS A MILLION - Now my wife will be HAPPY (I get my "techie" status back (inside joke)), Duaine Andrew Joakimsen wrote:

Their "RG" is, for lack of a better word, crap. Don't use it to host your network. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

I already know that since it's running Windows XX, the only thing it's, sort of, hosting is a shared printer. One of their (U-Verse) guru's tried to get me to install their remote diagnostic software - but - to no avail - of course - IT requires Windows. Moot point - when are people going to realize that Linux is here to stay !!!
