Smart problem: Guru and Packman are reporting corruption?
Hi! I have 2 10.0 installations where I use smart. Both have the same symptoms (after one recent upgrade like this). I always update the system with commands smart update smart upgrade Now, this is not working as I get errors from the servers: ftp.gwdg.de - files are "not found" packman.inode.at - "Server reports unexpected size" (Yes, other servers are working fine...) I've had these problems for couple of weeks now. I thought that this is a temporary problem, but obviously not. :-( How can I get these working again? -- HG.

I suggest that you take this to the smart forum where you will get a quicker answer since the developers of smart are there. For some reason, I do not think this I'd get anything from there. If you think about the problem: - packaging is done by OpenSUSE community not from smart-project - it's working with all other repositories, except 2 SUSE repositories (Guru and Packman) - seems more like the repositories are not ok - the problem has been there for couple of weeks already, if it was "global smart problem" other people would have known about it. So I think that the problem I'm seeing is in the OpenSUSE-land and not with smart itself. The 2 computers that I have running 10.0 have otherwise different settings. The other one with latest KDE the other not and so on. Both are now suddently showing the same problem with the 2 repositories I mentioned. I can not believe that I'm the only OpenSUSE user with these problems? Here is the errors I get on one of the computers (smart version 0.42) ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- error: Failed to download packages: error: http://ftp.gwdg.de/pub/linux/misc/suser-guru/rpm/10.1/RPMS/i686/smart-ksmart...: Not Found error: http://packman.inode.at/suse/10.1/./noarch/alsa-firmware-1.0.13-0.pm.0.noarc...: Server reports unexpected size error: http://packman.inode.at/suse/10.1/./i586/jack-0.102.20-0.pm.1.i586.rpm: Server reports unexpected size error: http://packman.inode.at/suse/10.1/./i686/ffmpeg-0.4.9-7.pm.svn20061008.i686....: Server reports unexpected size error: http://packman.inode.at/suse/10.1/./i586/alsa-devel-1.0.13-0.pm.0.i586.rpm: Server reports unexpected size error: http://packman.inode.at/suse/10.1/./i586/dvd+rw-tools-7.0-0.pm.0.i586.rpm: Server reports unexpected size error: http://packman.inode.at/suse/10.1/./i586/libraw1394-1.2.1-0.pm.1.i586.rpm: Server reports unexpected size error: http://packman.inode.at/suse/10.1/./i686/libxine1-1.1.2cvs-20061015.pm.0.i68...: Server reports unexpected size error: http://packman.inode.at/suse/10.1/./i686/imlib2-loaders-1.3.0-0.pm.1.i686.rp...: Server reports unexpected size error: http://packman.inode.at/suse/10.1/./i586/jack-devel-0.102.20-0.pm.1.i586.rpm: Server reports unexpected size error: http://packman.inode.at/suse/10.1/./i586/libavc1394-0.5.3-0.pm.1.i586.rpm: Server reports unexpected size error: http://packman.inode.at/suse/10.1/./i586/libcaca-0.9_0.99.beta5-0.pm.0.i586....: Server reports unexpected size error: http://packman.inode.at/suse/10.1/./i586/alsa-tools-1.0.13-0.pm.0.i586.rpm: Server reports unexpected size error: http://packman.inode.at/suse/10.1/./i686/faac-1.25-0.pm.3.i686.rpm: Server reports unexpected size error: http://ftp.gwdg.de/pub/linux/misc/suser-guru/rpm/10.1/RPMS/i686/smart-addons...: Not Found error: http://packman.inode.at/suse/10.1/./i686/libffmpeg0-devel-0.4.9-7.pm.svn2006...: Server reports unexpected size error: http://ftp.gwdg.de/pub/linux/misc/suser-guru/rpm/10.1/RPMS/i686/smart-0.42-1...: Not Found error: http://packman.inode.at/suse/10.1/./i586/alsa-1.0.13-0.pm.0.i586.rpm: Server reports unexpected size error: http://packman.inode.at/suse/10.1/./i686/libdvdread-0.9.7-0.pm.0.i686.rpm: Server reports unexpected size error: http://packman.inode.at/suse/10.1/./i686/libffmpeg0-0.4.9-7.pm.svn20061008.i...: Server reports unexpected size error: http://packman.inode.at/suse/10.1/./i686/libcddb-1.3.0-0.pm.0.i686.rpm: Server reports unexpected size error: http://ftp.gwdg.de/pub/linux/misc/suser-guru/rpm/10.1/RPMS/i686/libakode-2.0...: Not Found error: http://ftp.gwdg.de/pub/linux/misc/suser-guru/rpm/10.1/RPMS/i686/smart-gui-0....: Not Found error: http://packman.inode.at/suse/10.1/./i686/imlib2-1.3.0-0.pm.1.i686.rpm: Server reports unexpected size error: http://packman.inode.at/suse/10.1/./i586/gettext-0.14.5-0.pm.1.i586.rpm: Not Found ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- -- HG.

try first: in /var/lib/smart/channels rm <packman-channel-name>..... (there are probably 5 files) then do: smart update <packman-channel-name> if that does not work: repeate above, also rm /var/lib/smart/cache then do: smart update note: I have seen the same error, but on SUSE 10.1. -- Patrick Shanahan Registered Linux User #207535 http://wahoo.no-ip.org @ http://counter.li.org HOG # US1244711 Photo Album: http://wahoo.no-ip.org/gallery2

I already did that. In fact, I renamed the channels, packages, config and cache to *.old (i.e. removed them all). I then did smart update and smart upgrade and I'm still having the problem mentioned above.
note: I have seen the same error, but on SUSE 10.1.
Should I try to contact Guru and Packman themselves (how? who are they?) to figure out if there is something wrong with their repositories? Or are those mirrors? -- HG.

Guru, Pascal Bleser (iianm), participates in List-Id: Smart Package Manager mailing list <smart-labix.org> and *most* likely someone{s} from the packman *group*. I would follow the earlier advice to join that list and present your problem. Usually an answer/comment arrives quickly. I had the exact same problem, and could not get it to clear up. Eventually what I did was, remove smart, clear out anything I could find in /var/lib/smart, then re-install it, re-add the sources, then do an update. Then do the upgrade. And it all worked. I believe others have mentioned issues like this as well, not sure what they did to get it working again. I did try an rpm --rebuilddb, I did try deleting the smart cache, only thing that worked was removing it and cleaning up anything in /var/lib/smart... Michael

Exactly the thing to do... I just got this information from Pascal Bleser:
But the repository URL is wrong: .../rpm/10.1/... This was a bug caused by an inofficial patch, it's fixed in 0.42-14
As you cannot use smart to upgrade, do it "manually": rpm -Uvh \ ftp://ftp.gwdg.de/pub/linux/misc/suser-guru/smart/repo/10.0/i686/smart-*-14.guru.suse100.i686.rpm
I haven't done the manual upgrade yet, but I think this is the way to fix it. (Didn't notice that the URLs are wrong... :-( ) -- HG.

Reformat and reinstall? /me ducks! Maybe you can do another update. Smart just ran some patches now. It was about 60 files, I think. The only message I got was a note to import some pgp key from guru. Now, my smart thingy says, "no interesting upgrades available." I'd like to know if there were any uninteresting ones, too. -- Kai Ponte www.perfectreign.com || www.4thedadz.com remember - a turn signal is a statement, not a request
