[opensuse] My huawei ascend y221 only seen as mass storage after win xp in vbox has seen it.
Hi, I'm running Leap:42.1 Kde plasma5 and the device notifier only picks up my phone as mass storage after I've enabled and disabled the phone in a vbox win xp on my computer. If I connect as an mtp(media) device or a ptp(camera) it works fine. Here's a journalctl output when I go through this process :
Connect phone and select "turn on usb storage" on the phone.

I want to access it as mass storage (disk) without having to run win xp in vbox first. Thanks Dave -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org

Ah, I see. Then probably Windows changes a setting in the phone. There is an app to do the switch to modem in Linux (usb_modeswitch?), but I don't remember it also would do to mass storage. Perhaps you have to disable usb_modeswitch from automatically running. You also said:

Doesn't that suffice? My old phone appeared as mass storage, but my new one doesn't. It appears as mtp/ptp. - -- Cheers, Carlos E. R. Perhaps you have to disable usb_modeswitch from automatically running. I'm busy investigating usb_modeswitch, it doesn't have a configuration for my phone, they've instructions on the usb_modeswitch website for creating configuration's and I'm looking at them when I have spare time.

It seems like android has developed a love affair with ms, I couldn't connect to my daughter's samsung galaxy pocket at all on openSUSE 12.1 but could debug an htc desire with no problem. When connected as an mtp device it creates a ttyUSBx device, a modem. Thanks Dave P

Each phone is a little bit different, and some have settings in the Android settings panel. Mine is way down in Developer Options under Select USB Configurations. - - - You might not want to hear this, but I believe if you are cabling your phone to your computer you are doing it wrong. There are any number of free file managers for the phone, such as ES File Explorer that allow you to browse and transfer files from and to network resources (your computer) from the phone. Samba, FTP, OwnCloud, etc. Install KDE Connect (on linux and on the android phone). You can surf the phone from your computer over wifi and use Dolphin to drag and drop files in both directions. All this done with No cables. All WIFI. No Wifi? Turn on bluetooth!. Es File Explorer lets your computer surf your phone by bluetooth as well as surfing your phone from your computer. I have never ever cabled my computer to my current android. Once, about 3 phones ago I did it that way. No more. -- After all is said and done, more is said than done. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org

To me it is simple. Connect the cable to the computer, it charges, then fire up the file browser in XFCE. Drag and drop.

KDE Connect on Android? Interesting. What does it do? Link handy, perhaps? I found these: <https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=org.kde.kdeconnect_tp&hl=en> <https://community.kde.org/KDEConnect>
Es File Explorer lets your computer surf your phone by bluetooth as well as surfing your phone from your computer.
But it works as a client. You need to setup an ftp server on Linux, or samba. Or do you mean that ES. would work as server on the phone?
I have never ever cabled my computer to my current android. Once, about 3 phones ago I did it that way. No more.
I have downloaded some video files to my phone via http from my apache, and it feels slower than the USB cable. The WiFi on my laptop seems to max at 5 MB/s. And on my Android WiFi is the tool using most of the battery. - -- Cheers, Carlos E. R. Yup, Carlos, those are the proper links. I've been using it for a couple months, and it has been problem free. I use it for the following: 1) Clipboard Sync between android and computer. (My most common use) Someone sends me a link in a text message and I want to read it on my computer, I just select the link and copy it. I don't even have to send it. I simply open a browser on the computer and Middle click the address bar. The reverse also works, select/copy on Linux, paste into any Android app. 2) Quickly move files/pictures/music to Linux from phone. KDE connect becomes an android Share Target, showing up on the list of things you can use to share a file. And its FAST. 3) Your phone Shows up in Dolphin side bar, as just another directory you can browse or drag and drop, copy, files from or to your phone. 4) Text messages and any other alerts you get from your phone show up in KDE notifications. The notification lets you see who is calling before your phone even rings. 5) If your music is playing on KDE, and the phone rings, KDE connect will quiet the music for the duration of the call. 6) Walk away from the computer with your phone, and it will lock the screen, as you leave the same wifi network, but if your phone is nearby, the screen lock is inhibited. 7) You can install the Linux app on multiple computers and select which one you want to send files to, from the phone etc. There are a few other things, each configurable or optional in the KDE Desktop Settings plugin. Its amazingly well done, and minimal battery drain. Cautions: Some phones are set up to drop network connections if the screen goes to sleep. This is obviously something you would want to turn off, or Dolphin integration would suffer. Some phones, and some versions of Android, limit (prevent write) access to the external microsSD card, and you can not always access this storage area of the phone, even it if shows up in dolphin. It works only over wifi, and only on the current subnet. So if your wifi is served out of a different subnet than your computer, it won't connect. No Gnome users need apply, as best as I can tell. -- After all is said and done, more is said than done.

Nice. Although, I typically use WhatsApp on web, on the computer.

Yes. It is WiFi, disconnect on hibernate. Saves much battery.

Well, that's a problem for me, as I'm most of the time on XFCE. I use a number of KDE applications, just not the desktop. - -- Cheers, Carlos E. R. I'm a poor man, I'm saving up for a wifi dongle and a blue tooth one. Kde connect only works with a network atm my only chance of using it is via a vpn. I installed Leap on someone's laptop and with network manager it created a usb network connection but kde connect couldn't use it, tried blue tooth but that didn't work either and I didn't get a chance to use it. Have to use wicked otherwise my internet doesn't work properly. Dave P -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org
