[opensuse] Skype 4.0 for Linux
Hi All, This item just appeared on slashdot ... Skype 4.0 For Linux Now Available http://linux.slashdot.org/story/12/06/14/223213/skype-40-for-linux-now-avail... "Anyone who uses Skype on Linux will be happy to hear that a new version has been made available today(1), bringing with it a host of essential updates and new features. Skype 4.0, codenamed "Four Rooms for Improvement," is long overdue, and Marco Cimmino makes a point of thanking Linux users for their patience on the Skype blog(2). The main improvements Skype is delivering include much improved audio call quality, better video support, and improved chat synchronization. For video specifically, Skype has spent time implementing support for a much wider range of webcams, so if your camera didn't work before today you might be surprised to find it does in Skype 4.0. Visually, Skype has received a new Conversations View, which brings all chats into a single, unified window (you can revert to the old view if you prefer). There's also a new Call View, presence and emoticons have been redesigned, and you can now store and view numbers within each Skype profile." I've got it running just would be nice to have a 64 bit version so you don't have to install all the extra 32 bit libraries. The only thing that doesn't seem to work is my video but then I haven't really spent that much time on it yet. Most likely the LD_PRELOAD stuff (which the 64 bit version would eliminate). -- Regards Scott Newton -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org

Yes. LD_PRELOAD=/usr/lib/libv4l/v4l1compat.so /usr/bin/skype gets my video working again. Still kind of annoying though that that is necessary. -- Regards Scott Newton -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org

Interesting.. I've installed it here on 64 bit, and I didn't need to use the LD_PRELOAD to have video working. The only complaint I've got so far is that I cannot find a way to get it to ring on the external speakers and have the call audio on headphones like I could (very easily) with the 2.2 release. So far it seems to be and all or nothing... one or the other. Ekiga is good; unfortunately, it doesn support pulse audio yet. The microphone thus doesn't work on my machine.

It goes easy on firewalls, nat, and doesn't hijack resources as skype does. But, it needs opening FF and login to gmail. - -- Cheers / Saludos, Carlos E. R. Google Talk and hangouts work decently fine. It just needs to add Google- plugins repo to make it work. The only setback from my point of view it doesn't have a client for Linux and it needs a Google session web browser opened to work. It should work on 12.2 too because it doesn't need a client application but web browser Regards, -- Ricardo Chung | Panama Linux & FOSS Ambassador openSUSE Projects -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org

Thanks for your reply Philippe. I found what it was. The "space left on device" is actually referring to available bandwidth on the USB bus. I happened to have connected my new smartphone on the same USB hub as the webcam and the system was complaining that it could not accommodate both. disconnecting the phone solve the problem. /~jc -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org

I tried to download 2.2 to prevent the above: Not possible. The file not found:'libstdc++.so.6', is provided by 'libstdc++45' which was already installed. But 'GLIBCXX_3.4.15' is not found in any repo. Tried the wrapped version, that worked, but it complained about missing libstdc++44 on forehand. I tried knowing the stuff that was needed was onboard, and it did work: camera, sound, chat, phone, without a problem. I am very glad 4 this, because everybody i know uses skype, so now there is no absolute reason to use XP on my eeepc.. :-) Thanks guys 4 tipping me of here... Packagekit does not seem to recognise difference between packages, as she complains about the above, refering to the wrapped package: 2.1.0.81-0w1.1, that is installed, and works, thinking the dep for that package cannot be solved, while another package has to be installed. I am not realy a newby, but i can imagine the pain it causes to try to install an app, and some burocratic packagemanager fails to recognise the file that is needed is there, but provided by a version with a higher number. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org

No, it is the new package that doesn't say it is a replacement for the old one. And in any case, packagekit is known to be broken. Use yast or zypper instead. - -- Cheers / Saludos, Carlos E. R. No, it is the new package that doesn't say it is a replacement for the old one. And in any case, packagekit is known to be broken. Use yast or zypper instead.
OK package kit is broken. Yast does not react when choosen from a filemanager. And i do not know how to install from a directory exept what i try to do with rpm: rpm {-i} [--nodeps] --dbpath ~/oddball/Downloads/pkgfile (if i want to install) or rpm {-u} [--nodeps] --dbpath ~/oddball/Downloads/pkgfile (if i want to upgrade) would this be correct? - -- Cheers / Saludos, Carlos E. It should. If it doesn't, the filemanager is using the wrong command call. You can call it as "yast --install path_and_filename.rpm" - -- Cheers / Saludos, Carlos E. R. It is a tar.bz2, when unpacked you have to manually move/copy the files to their places... I have uninstalled the 4.0.0.7 version for now, and reinstalled the wrapped 2.0.something version, that version installs normally, complains, but works alright. Thanks to everyone who contributed to this thread. It helped a lot. Just to wrap it up, here's what I ended up doing, and, so far so good (knock on wood) ... keep in mind I'm running 11.4 x86_64 w/ GNOME 2 First, in case you're not aware, Skype for Linux is now at 4.0.0.8 I installed the "dynamic static" package (o_O): http://download.skype.com/linux/skype-4.0.0.8.tar.bz2 (What the heck is a "dynamic static" package?!) From my notes: --> uninstalled prior rpm packaged version via cli, ran ldconfig & SuSEconfig --> downloaded and unpacked "dynamic static" version from http://download.skype.com/linux/skype-4.0.0.8.tar.bz2 --> backed up my user space config & data under ~/.Skype to ~/.skypebak using rsync -av --> backed up /usr/share/skype/lang to /usr/share/skype/.lang-prev ditto /usr/share/skype/sounds to /usr/share/skype/.sounds-prev --> copied unpacked executable 'skype' to /usr/bin --> copied unpacked directories to /usr/share/skype avatars/ icons/ lang/ sounds/ --> Added a new, custom launcher to my panel Name: 'Skype' Description: 'Skype' Command: 'skype &' Icon: selected largest from /usr/share/skype/icons It launched without issues the first time and seems to be running now without a problem.
