FSSTD = File System Standard - there is a Linux file system standard, and all the distributors say they're following it.
The FSSTD isn't as complete as some people would like it. It gives some rules of do's and dont's, but leaves a lot of open questions... The main things are: * Config files in /etc * /usr must be mountable read only, so no changing files here.. (thats the reason for the weird X11 links: /usr/X11R6/bin/X -> /var/X11R6/bin/X -> /usr/X11R6/bin/XF86_* In this way you can change yopur X server without writing to /usr. Needed when you export /usr to clients etc...) * Keep /usr/local free for user installed applictions (I know, we use /usr/local/ftp and /usr/local/http ...) * .... We try to follow FSSTD as good as we can, but because of historic resons some things not where they should to be. We are working on this...
