The FSSTD isn't as complete as some people would like it. It gives some
rules of do's and dont's, but leaves a lot of open questions...
The main things are:
* Config files in /etc
* /usr must be mountable read only, so no changing files here..
(thats the reason for the weird X11 links:
/usr/X11R6/bin/X -> /var/X11R6/bin/X -> /usr/X11R6/bin/XF86_*
In this way you can change yopur X server without writing to
/usr. Needed when you export /usr to clients etc...)
* Keep /usr/local free for user installed applictions
(I know, we use /usr/local/ftp and /usr/local/http ...)
* ....
We try to follow FSSTD as good as we can, but because of historic
resons some things not where they should to be. We are working on
this...
