Silly stuff... Trying to install a new video card and ran into a snag with the sound system dropping offline. ?? Still working on that issue when I had to go to the office today. While I was out the power dropped long enough that the system crashed. I think my shutdown software isn't working. But that and the video card business are other topics... I powered up a little while ago and it only gets to the text prompt, no more to the gui and I'm mostly lost at the command line. I've been poking around and trying to figure out what is hosed, but cannot. I know only a little bit and vi looks daunting. I must need to edit a config file, but ... which one? The messages I see on the screen just when it stops loading and hits the command prompts tells me what's wrong I think, just not what file to edit: Starting Sound Driver: emu10k1 done Restoring the previous Sound Setting: failed then Master Resource Control: Run Level 5 has been reached Failed Services in Runlevel 5: alsasound skipped services in runlevel 5: nfs smbfs I don't comprend the runlevel bit yet, but since I've acheived Runlevel 5, I should be able to get a gui but I don't know how to get there so.... 1. anyone know what file I need to edit to fix the problem with the sound? 2. can I get the bugger to a gui so I can use tools I know how to use instead of that god awful vi? I would probably corrupt the crap outta a config file trying to use that thing. Thanks for any help! luckily you don't have to use VI, this is a video problem that I've seen every time I upgrade the kernel. You need yo go to init 3, by putting that on a command line by itself like this: your_prompt_ #> init 3 now you must be root to do this, so if you aren't, you first need to su to root: your_prompt > sux and of course it will ask you for the root password. then when it says init 3 has been reached, run sax2 Your_prompt > sax2 it will walk you through setting up the video card. then I normally reboot. as for the sound issue, you might want to ask in a separate email.. -- Paul Cartwright Registered Linux user # 367800

No need to reboot, you are only setting the video for X (runlevel 5). Just return to the command line and issue: init 5 -- Patrick Shanahan Registered Linux User #207535 http://wahoo.no-ip.org @ http://counter.li.org HOG # US1244711 Photo Album: http://wahoo.no-ip.org/gallery2

I have done that, and I have had problems. My mouse cursor is sometimes split into 2 icons, a few inches apart, and it does weird things... -- Paul Cartwright Registered Linux user # 367800
