KDE 3.4.3 RPMs for SuSE 10.0 ?
Hi all, I'm wondering why there are still no update stable KDE 3.4.3 packages for SuSE 10.0. The SuSE 9.3 ones was released some days ago. Any reason for that?. I'm missing the place where that packages can be downloaded?. I've missed something, as I suspected. As example we can find it at ftp://ftp.rediris.es/pub/linux/distributions/suse/pub/suse/i386/supplementary/KDE/update_for_10.0 I assume other mirrors also include the packages. But still I can't find them at ftp.gwdg.de. The above link is from a suse user. Also we need an apt KDE stable repository for 10.0 ;) Guillermo -- Guillermo Ballester Valor gbv@oxixares.com Ogijares, Granada SPAIN Public GPG KEY http://www.oxixares.com/~gbv/pubgpg.html #################################################### See World Weather Navigator at http://www.ogimet.com ####################################################

Well, it takes time for the mirrors to sync with the new files. Be patient. Dylan -- "The man who strikes first admits that his ideas have given out." (Chinese Proverb)

The poor "ftp.gwdg.de" ... I can remember times where using ftp.gwdg.de was real fun. Nowadays it is heavily burdened. It seems to get the most traffic regarding all the (open)SuSE stuff ;-) But on the other hand it has become a reference -- a standard; everyone is refering to it like "ftp.gwdg.de is slow" From my point of view the major site should be "ftp.suse.com"
Also we need an apt KDE stable repository for 10.0 ;)
Why not a YUM repo as well ? Never give up ! Best regards, Reinhard.

The SUSE people are currently in a process of building up a "Tier-1" mirroring hierarchy. This will duplicate the current role of ftp.gwdg.de to hopefully nearly 10 servers, spreaded worldwide. A major step in my guess, because the volume of a single distribution has increased so much that no single host (no single host "yet" - I'm struggling, you know ;-)) is able to fulfill the needs at those "release moments". At those points in time, it is not enough for a server to have bandwidth; since the size of the new stuff is far beyond current RAM sizes, the disk heads are more moving than delivering data. You all have seen that lately these moments have turned into days.
But on the other hand it has become a reference -- a standard; everyone is refering to it like "ftp.gwdg.de is slow"
It will continue to grow (like Mike has seen it for 10 years now), I'm very prosperous. But "the need" has to be obvious before the next evolution step can happen.
From my point of view the major site should be "ftp.suse.com"
Also we need an apt KDE stable repository for 10.0 ;)
Will come tonight or during the day.
Why not a YUM repo as well ?
Not usable for apt.
Never give up !
... and keep on struggling. ;-)) Cheers -e -- Eberhard Moenkeberg (emoenke@gwdg.de, em@kki.org)

Well, apt repo might not be usefull for YUM users, that's true. But based on the posts in the opensuse mailing lists I though all the apt stuff will be canceld and YUM should be the tool of choice. Isn't that valid anymore ? Otherwise I would not understand to supply a apt repo but no YUM repo ... Never give up ! Best regards, Reinhard.

It's correct. To give you an official statement on this: We have dropped "apt-rpm" for SUSE Linux 10.1 and added "smart" [http://www.smartpm.org/], which is the successor of apt (developed by the original apt developer). The "Smart Package Manager" is able to access YUM repos, as well as APT repos + it has a very similar user experience in terms of both commandline interface and GUI (like synaptic).
Otherwise I would not understand to supply a apt repo but no YUM repo.
I'll try to make sure that we provide a YUM repo of the KDE supplementary trees... Regards Christoph

Yum repo is not usable for apt'ers.

Not Yum as tool, but the Yum repo as a format. It looks like smartpm will be the successor of apt, but not today yet and maybe not next year yet.
Otherwise I would not understand to supply a apt repo but no YUM repo ...
It is a task of any suser to supply a Yum repo, but the apt repo has to get built at the server. Cheers -e -- Eberhard Moenkeberg (emoenke@gwdg.de, em@kki.org)

It is all present at ftp.gwdg.de.

OK, I need hints like this to actualize the aptate conf. The next repository generation will bring lots of new components for SuSE-10.0, both i386 and x86_64. Cheers -e -- Eberhard Moenkeberg (emoenke@gwdg.de, em@kki.org)

yast-source
Files that indicate to YaST what's in the repository and where to find it.
The others I don't need.
How can you know what you do and don't need if you don't know what's there? I personally think it's a lot easier to use YaST to install anything that's available in a YaST-compatible repository, resorting to manual RPM installation only when that's not possible. Others will recommend one of the other installers, but I'm only comfortable with YaST, which has always served me well.
Thanks,

Yeah I understood this but what's the big need to separate the two?
source Source code RPMs
These are only source code or application plus source code? If they are only source then why are they provided as RPMs?

Internationalization obviously I don't need. Nor the experimental version. Nor the original source code. Nor the yast-source.

I have a problem with YOU and direct FTP repositories in YaST which I have previously reported on suse-linux-e but which were never solved. So I am forced to download and install. Besides, if I download KDE 3.43 to my HDD, I can copy it and give it to my father and perhaps others too. Shriramana.

You do not use YOU to upgrade packages, YOU is only for security updates which come in the update directory on ftp.suse.com and mirrors. If you want to upgrade packages from other repositories (be it supplementary, packman or others) you open software management, select "package selection", zzz-all and then in the menu packages->all in this list->update if newer version available. Then if you select installation summary from the drop down selection you can see what YaST is proposing. I hope this clears why YOU is not upgrading your system. That's the organization the developers decided upon. It's a very large system, and it's divided into a base / core and things built upon that base.

They are source code RPMs. (I feel like I'm repeating myself, somehow.) They are the sources encapsulated in an RPM, which includes information about how to configure their build and install them.
...
